The car (924) was originally designed by Porsche for VW because VW wanted to have a sporty car in their lineup and it incorporated lots of off the shelf VW and Audi parts including the 90hp iron block 2.0. Later, the project was cancelled at VW but Porsche decided to run with it and build the car anyway. Later, the 944 got a new all 2.5l aluminum engine that made more power but was far less reliable and troublesome than the iron Audi 2.0. The aluminum four eventually grew to 3.0l which is pretty large for a gasoline four. It needed counter-rotating balance shafts to quell the vibrations. |
