Have you ever thought that you would like to put a plastic windage tray in your engine? Of course not! It's obviously a stupid idea...unless you are a VW/Audi engineer.

These are pictures I took at an engine rebuild shop here in Tampa. Among the "souvenirs" that live in a little box on the front counter of the shop is this little gem.



It looks like an oil pickup tube swallowed a shop rag...until you pick it up.



The plastic is hard at room temperature and is firmly stuck up in the pickup tube.



This came from a VW 1.8T engine that got a little warm on a trip back from Orlando and the woman (surprise) decided not to pull over for it to cool down. The same or a similar windage tray lives in the 2.0T according to the shop.

Notice the rivets that are supposed to retain the windage tray are still with it.

 

Plastic and engines don't go to together

 

unless you have an NC.. Every time I begin to warm up to that car I see the plastic engine and the snakes that go with it. Yuck! but plastic inside the engine, thats epic fail right there, wow.

 

they have a plastic windage tray? for real?!

 

Here's a pic or two sniped from vwvortex. It looks like the tray also directs oil from the head drain ports to the sump.




Notice the rivets in the first pic.

EDIT: It looks like the 3.2 VW/Audi engine uses a plastic one as well.

 

lol @ that failure of a car company. I can't believe people buy these **** boxes. The day i gave aay my VW crap was a sweet one and I've never looked back.

 

The new mazda 2.0-2.5 and mazdaspeed motors use a plastic oil pickup.

 

Plastic ON an engine, OK, but plastic IN an engine... FAIL!

 

Anyone see this?

 

My buddy keeps buying these crap boxes on a neverending basis. Like one of these days hes going to find a $1000 VW thats never going to have random stuff break on it with no warning.
