made it
my wife and i made it irvine last tuesday afternoon.
we are moved into our new place and about 95% unpacked, the majority of the stuff not is in the garage. tougest part beside moving from a house to a condo is the one car garage. the miata 'just' fits inside and the honda is parked outside.
we wound up driving just over 3000 miles altogether including two side trips to santa fe, the grand canyon and sedona. I-40 follows old Rt 66 from OKC westward. the drive from charlotte west to memphis was pretty. the drive from west of memphis to the new mexico border, not so much.
new mexico to california was absolutely stunning and the expansive scale of the landscape is really humbling. the honda kept throwing an ECU code from amarillo westard. i suspect it may have been the elevation changes, and i reset the ecu as needed.
a good friend of ours in nc gave us a roof basket and GPS which were invaluable. our greyhound was able to sleep comfortably in the hatch as we drove while the majority of our luggage was on top of the car in a waterprrof bag on the basket.
we both start our new jobs tomorrow and we are both very excited! i am finally adjusting to the time zone and had a good night's sleep last night. yesterday morning i got up early and took the PCH from Irvine to san juan capistrano in the miata. i hadn't driven it in about a week and it felt great! it was like putting a pair of your favorite old tennis shoes.
here are a few pics of our trip:

Welcome (back?) to california. Hope you and your wife enjoy living here ... well im way up north a bit past fresno, but its still "here". Try to come up sometime next year to an autocross at castle airforce base in Merced, its a really nice venue. It would be a bit of a drive, but you would be more than welcome to stay at my place which is a half hour drive from it.
