Default Savannah, GA

My wife wants to come down to GA for vacation over Easter weekend. She has always wanted to visit Savannah but didn't want to do it in the summer due to the heat and humidity so she thought this would be a good time to do it so that's where we are going. It's just a getaway mini-vacation. We are free Thursday through Monday Easter weekend.

So, what is there to do/see? I see that Hilton Head is close. What about in the city? This will be a chick vacation. Whatever she wants to do so feel free to suggest chick things.

Also, what airport do those of you in the area normally fly into/ out of when you are going somewhere?

I know that I have seen Savannah listed as a location for someone here, but I don't recall who.

I'll be in Savannah, GA on March 21-24th. I will be eating fried chicken at the Lady and Sons for dinner one night, then sitting in my hotel room all day playing video games on my laptop.

Definitely eat at Lady and Sons while you are there. It requires you to get in line around 9am to get a reservation for that day, but it's worth it. Great Southern food. Get the buffet!
I've spend several weekends there and I would suggest doing the Old Town trolley tour. You can get cheaper tickets online. It's really fun just walking around to the many little parks throughout the city. Also, you might want to visit Tybee Island. It's pretty low key there (not a lot of bars/nightlife), but it has a lighthouse you can climb, a nice beach, and some great eating spots (especially broiled seafood). I loved the shrimp and grits from Sunrise cafe. We stayed in a cottage there for a long weekend and loved it. Walked to the beach each day, etc. Oh yeah, we also did a dolphin watching boat ride and saw tons of dolphins and got a great scenic view of the lighthouse. If you've seen the trailer for the new Miley Cyrus movie , it's got lots of footage of Tybee as it was filmed there (including the lighthouse). Written by Nicholas Sparks so you can't get much more Chicky than that.

Can't help you on the airport as I drive up, but Savannah does have an airport. Jacksonville is about 2 hours away.

That's what I was guessing. Looks like it might be the best bet.

Luckily we are getting in with a group and have it reserved for that night....I'm going to a user group conference for our web content management system, and her site's are clients along with the Savannah chocolate company. We toured that place last year and got free candy, yay for fatty.

Default If making FL part of the trip

I'd fly in to Jax and make the drive to Savannah part of the trip. Pick up the rental then proceed south on 95. If you want to hit up the Jax. Zoo, continue South until the Heckscher Dr. exit East. Otherwise go 9A East (aka 295 East) and Exit at Heckscher Dr. East. Unless you want to drive over the Dames Pt. Bridge (awesome) for kicks- then loop back around to recross and resume. Heckscher will eventually turn into A1A, which IMO is an awesome driving road. You'll drive along the St. John's River (grab some boiled peanuts at the ferry) through FL state parks, and then along the Atlantic coast onto Amelia Island up through Fernandina and back over to 95N.

In Savannah- find a B&B that's close to walking distance for old Savannah and the river. Definitely go out to Ft. Pulaski and Tybee Island.

Will you carry it or drive it? If the latter you will need bring a pillow to sit on because the car has nothing on the inside but the dash and steering wheel.

You could always hit up the not-so-secret race track and do some hot laps in the rental.

Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade is a party. I went there one year from Atlanta. We ended up in an Irish (or was it English?) Pub that had all of the interior wood and bar that was several hundred years old imported from an old establishment across the pond. It's been years and I can't recall the name, but the atmosphere was authentic.

Parts of the old city are nice to walk around in. There are some walking tours IIRC.

The famous old Roebling Road race course is there, but not very chick oriented.

They also filmed part of it in Charleston, SC. I know a guy who was in it (they cut his part out). He was in the scene where Forest sees Jenny in Playboy.

St.P day in Savannah is a HUGE gay and lez celebration (I know some dikes on bikes that go each year). They say it is party town on that weekend.

Anyway, I plan on a trip to Lady and Sons at some time. Been meaning to take my wife there for years. Have a friend that goes a couple of times a year for the country fried steak and mac/cheese.

Well, just booked the hotel. Hotel points FTW. Covered three of the four nights. Staying on River Street so should be close to everything going on. Thanks for all of the ideas.

Karla was already planning on Lady and Sons. I didn't know that it was Paula Dean's place but she did.

So, do you really have to physically go there in the AM to set a reservation for that day? They don't take advance reservations?

Lol, i got booty, from a girl....(i think, had a vagina)Pretty hot too, there on st pattys in 06, so it wasn't too gay but i did see a bunch of flamers, maybe i was the only straight guy, but still, thats the odds a guy wants, right. Anyways, Chandlers little tiny restaurant in Knoxville Tn has far superior fried chicken to Lady and Sons. Chandlers also has grape koolaid sometimes, i am pretty sure it is more sugar than water.

When I went to Lady and Sons, you had to physically go there at 9:30 the morning of and stand in line to make a reservation for that day (lunch or dinner). Crazy, but true. I drove in from Tybee (25 minutes) on a Monday in August and there were 50 or so people in line. No problem getting a lunch reservation. Lots of people want dinner. The place is much bigger inside than it looks (3 stories high). IF you just want to try the food, you can walk right in the front door around lunch and get a to-go buffet. Cost is like $15, but you are in and out and get the same food. Growing up eating VERY Southern food, I too can name various places that have better Chicken or Mac and Cheese, but they make it all very well. One of the few places I continued to eat after full just because it tasted so good!

I think I showed up at 10 last year, checked into my hotel and had nothing to do, so I wanted to get on the list for lunch...they laughed in my face.

This year the conference I'm with has reserved a dinner there. So that makes me happy.

Also, I got a few free samples of her product last year, few jars of sauces. Our gov't made sure I couldn't bring them on a plane...but I got through two airports with a pocket knife...

Going to call shortly. They take reservations for Easter Sunday by phone for small parties. At least I should be able to be laughed at long distance.

So what's good eats? I have a good chunk of change I can spend daily on food and I'm getting breakfast and lunch already on the house... so I gotta find the most expensive steak ever...

I don't know about steak, but we have already been directed to dine at The Pink House. Almost all seafood, though per the online menu. I never get steak when I travel. Heck, I live in Nebraska. We KNOW good steak-it comes from here.

Oh, and we were able to get reservations for two at Lady and Sons. It appears they only take reservations for small parties on Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Easter and one other day that I forget.
