Swish it with warm salt water. (big spoonful of salt in a coffee mug of warm, almost hot, water)
Chew an asprin or take a pain reliever (tylenol, ibuprofen, etc)
Go to some all night drug store and buy some numbing gel, like Orajel or Anbesol.

Depends on what is causing the pain. Symptoms? Throbbing? Lingering? Sharp pain? What provokes the pain? Cold? Hot? Sweets? Spontaneous? Posture?
Try Motrin 800mg if you don't have access to an Rx. If you do, vicodin or tylenol #3 should do until you see your dentist.

Lol, take it from someone who puts off toothpain as long as possible...
Percocet, or Vikaden, or even better Tylenol+Codine (think its called Tylenol3)....
Or the old school way 3-4advils (tylenol sux), and a shot of ur fav stuff...Works like a charm all the time..

best thing to do that a dentist wont tell you is to use clove oil. Can be bought at vitamin shop or food store with herbal department. just put some on ur finger and rub on ur tooth. taste like ****, but works.
Been there too many times. If it is an abcess it will laugh at oil of clove (is it safe?). Only narcotics will help. Then as suggested a good 'ol root canal. My worst one was while I was in the back country of the High Sierra. Couldn't get to a dentist for a few days. I was drooling on myself from the pain. I call it "spiritual pain" because it goes beyond the physical. Good luck man.

Went to the dentist today and yep I have an abscess. Gettin it drilled next tuesday. Im gonna have to live on percocets for week. Im also gonna have to put off painting the car for a good while.
$1600 would have gotten me a nice paint job.

Oil of cloves or eugenol will help quiet the tooth down some if the tooth is still alive and there's a hole in the tooth. If it is has an abcess, then it's necrotic and it won't do anything. Take antibiotics (amox 500 three times a day unless allergic to penicillin). Once the infection clears (about 3 days), you'll feel alot better. If it's really bad, they can open the tooth up and do something called an "open and med" to drain the abcess. It's pretty much a temporary root canal treatment, but offers quick relief of pain.
