Definitely not a good one to introduce someone to gose with, but quite decent if you like strong sours. And it is blessedly devoid of fruit.
Why the hell do people feel the need to put fruit and herbs in everything? I feel the recent up-swell in interest regarding sours is backlash from the IPA arms race that has been going on for the last decade, but now we have to put fruit in everything? I'm not sure if this is better or worse. </rant> I'm trying to decide if I'm going to brew on Monday. It feels like its time to get something in bottles for summer. |
If you like fruit-less gose (as respectable people do), this one is also excellent:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9d32d3282f.png It lacks the initial punch-in-the-mouth, and instead just delivers a nice, consistent, slightly complex flavor. Not sure about availability (they're local to Chicago) but if you can find one, I highly recommend it. |
Calling E02K !!
Desperately seeking a few cans of this latest limited release gem from Alvarado St. and I can't find any up here in the bay area. Any chance you'll be stopping by there in the near future? I'd be much obliged.

This spring's selection:
Unita brewing's Detour. This is a big fat ipa that will IN YOUR FACE. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...03a802d9e5.png Evolution brewing Lot No 6 IPA. Also but not as face. Much more drinkable. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...192fff5aaf.png (not my photo) And lastly no photo, but my neighbor brewed a blood orange IPA (to follow his blood orange saison). It was impeccably delicious and had no fruity-ness whatsoever. If anything, the combination brought forth an almost hibiscussy floral note that had some sweetness in it, but not enough to distract from the hoppy vibe. Real tasty. And of course, always supporting the local guys at DC Brau. |

Sure, let me see what I can do. These guys have a taproom attached to their brewing location over on the industrial side of town, and that just so happens to be the closest drinking establishment to my office :giggle: |
I've had a number of TJ-branded beers that were pretty darn good, and a number that were just sort of "meh."
This one falls into the latter category. I'll stick with their Stockyard Oatmeal Stout. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e3ec3aad05.png |
I'll take even a "meh" stout over any sort of IPA, any day.
|
Don't get me wrong, it's not bad. It's perfectly acceptable, in fact. It's just not amazing.
The Stockyard is only 50¢ more per six-pack, and I'd pick it over this one. |

The hop salad guys are amusing. There are limits to good taste.

I regret to inform you that they 'sold out of everything they had on release night' Pretty cool place though, hadn't made it over here before. ... It smells like yeast and hops, my kind of place! From what I can tell, the brewery is definitely very well regarded by all the cool kids in all the "in" beer joints around the bay. They all seem to go crazy for their stuff; lining up for a draft pour or couple cans here and there, so they must be doing a thing or two right. They just don't do much in way of big stouts so I have yet to have an occasion to try out their products. Maybe next year. |
