can someone in the military tell me what this is?

Hey guys, as some of you know, I have a son going to school in Texas. He just received this in the mail:
Is this a prank? What should he do about it? Can he just ignore it? He's legally in the US under a Student Visa. Do you guys know if this organization is indeed a part of the US government or is this some kind of scam trying to get his visa info? Thanks, |
Not a prank, its a selective service registration card. As far as I know, all college students have to register for selective service when they enroll, at least my school requires it.
|
Yup. Every american (male at least) has to sign up for selective service at the age of 18. You are basically putting you name into a potential future draft pool. Pretty sure you are legally obligated to do it. Its highly likely that he had to register for it to attend a a state college. I KNOW that you have to be registered to qualify for any state or federal student financial aid.
|
It is a legitimate organization.
"If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number. When you do obtain a social security number, let Selective Service know." From the .gov site |
Thanks guys. So, he should send the form back along with a copy of his I-94 Visa. He's not a US citizen.
Many thanks for the help. :bigtu: |
|
I don't believe you have to be a citizen. If you are a male living in the US mean you have to register.
|
Now I'm curious. What is the deal with selective service when not a citizen? They can't call a non citizen to serve can they?
|
I never filled that shit out lol
|
A quote from Wikipedia:
"Who must register Under current law, all male U.S. citizens are required to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. In addition, foreign males between the ages of 18 and 26 living in the United States must register. This includes permanent residents (holders of Green Cards), refugees, asylees, dual citizens, and undocumented/illegal aliens.[2] Foreign males in the United States as lawful non-immigrants (international students, visitors, diplomats, etc.) are not required to register.[2] Failure to register as required is grounds for denying a petition for US citizenship." Given what I just highlighted, I take it he has to send the form and card back along with a copy of his I-94. Also; neogenesis mentioned financial aid but he's not using any kind of financial aid for this. BTW Dan, what a pleasure to hear from you! ;) |
They absolutely can. Its a condition of your status of your green card or whatever paperwork you had to obtain to legally enter the country.
|
Looking at the form, it looks like he's already enrolled. Knowing our govt the way we all seem to, I doubt sending it back will cause them to deenroll him. Its really not a big deal, I doubt there will be another draft until WWIII.

Thinking about it, I don't think I ever got my card. I don't remember sending mine in when I turned 18, and I'm sure I had to have filled one out as I was under financial aid 4 or 5 years ago the first time I was in school. Maybe I haven't lol |
If you ever filled out a FAFSA then you are registered.

You did when you filled out your FAFSA the first time. Its part of the form. There is a checkbox that says "Have you registered for selective service?". If you check NO, you get registered. If you check yes and you are lying, they will find out and you will be denied all aid.

His mom and I are paying for that from our own savings :vash: |
I got registered by registering to vote when I was 18 automatically.
Still hate that stupid fucking law :/ |

In all the documents we had to translate it was clear that you had to be a US citizen or resident to apply for student loan assistance. |
