Changing my mind again :(

could you imagine the outrage if you towed your miata with an M5?
i'll bet it would do a good job too.
i think the answer for you is a '90's diesel truck. cheap. decent gas mileage when towing, and the rest of the time it stays parked. if you don't mind super-ghetto you can get old uhaul box trucks for like $1000.

Over the past couple of days here in Germany, I've seen a large number of rather ordinary sedans & estates (wagons) pulling all sorts of things. Horseboxes, caravans, trailers w/ 4 motorcycles on them, a double-decker containing about a dozen sheep, etc. I'm actually a bit surprised by the number of "small" cars that have permanently-installed trailer hitches on 'em.

Diesel truck would be overkill. Gasoline engine 1500s can pull considerably more than you think. I regularly pulled a 69 Firebird Convertible on a dual axle trailer with my old 96 Z71 and it was the 5.0 not the 5.7. It was actuall very well behaved pulling to firebird.
Ive also pulled a full size chevy suburban with an 03 dodge 4.7, i was very surprised it pulled it without much hasle.
And the 05 Dodge with the Hemi and 3.92s well its pulled dang near everything.
My vote goes to a late 90s Chevy 1500 with the 5.7, my 96 was my favorite truck, cheap as hell to maintain and very reliable.
Possible a mid to late 90s dodge ive had good luck with those to.

i am towing my 2000lb 18' trailer / 2300lb miata with a '96 nissan pathfinder (3.3liter v6). it works fine, but gas mileage in the low teens gets old. a diesel would be twice that mileage for an open trailer.

Edit: I do pull a trailer or have employees pull trailers (usually multiple trailers) every day. Because of that experience, I would not have anything other than a capable tow vehicle that was designed to tow stuff.....safely and reliably.
