College Final Project Ideas
Hey guys I am looking for some input or creative ideas for my senior capstone project. I am a senior at Eastern Kentucky University studying Network Security & Electronics. One of my final classes is called 'Senior Capstone.' Where basically, I decide on a project and work all semester on it to complete. It is preferred to be something innovative and useful dealing with either Networking, Computer systems, and/or Electronics.
My first project idea was that I wanted to incorporate my Megasquirt build that I am completing, but I have to figure out some type of modification or alteration to make it unique and either helpful/solve a problem. I was thinking about maybe building a PC with a double DIN touch screen that would control and monitor the Megasquirt, but my biggest concern is powering it. Obviously it would suck to have to boot up and shut down each drive. Maybe a windows tablet would work but mounting it would be a problem, also I don't think it would support tuner studio.
I am just asking if anyone has cool ideas, related or unrelated that I could consider for my senior project.
Thanks all

Design an AVB-compatible ethernet switch with 48 10/100/1000 ports and the ability to chain three units together in a ring with at least 100 GB inter-switch capacity. It would be preferable to use commodity FPGAs such as the Xilinx Kintex or Virtex series.
Don't worry about the power supplies or enclosure- I will provide those.

We took 1900's era magneto telephones and hooked them up to a VoIP network. Complete with turning the crank to take it off hook and voice recognition for your operator.

THE PROBLEM:
All too often I find myself reading something on my desktop computer that I'm really interested in when I feel a big healthy turd wanting to get out - or when I'm trying to take whats on my display to anywhere else in my house (cooking recpies to the kitchen / youtube vids to the living room / etc.) And there is no "bridge" in the gap between the extreme "ease of use" of my desktop computer, and the convenience and portability of my tablet.
Solution:
Create a computer interface solution that functions just as any normal desktop computer - except that when I'm reading something that I'm really interested in, I can slip the monitor off of the "monitor dock" and take it with me to the crapper, or into the living room to sit and play in front of the TV. The displaydock would transmit video wirelessly to the display. You'll want to use a touchscreen interface as designed on windows 8 compatible monitors so that when you take your battery powered display to the living room, you still have full control. All processing capabilities are handled by the desktop computer, it simply transmits A/V wirelessly to the display, and the display transmits mouse/keyboard commands to the desktop computer.
ALTERNATIVELY -
create a NFC station that connects to my computer via USB, and when I've got that turtlehead poking out in the middle of reading an article i simply wave my nexus tablet near the NFC sender and the website that I'm looking at opens on the page and location that I'm currently viewing on my display with cookies/login/user information transferred simultaneously.

Ain't nobody got time for that. There are 24 port 10/100/1000 AVB switches available if you really want one. like $1300 or some shii. It won't have the bells and whistles you prefer though.
Haha I know what you mean. My professor made this very broad and I've already talked to him about some stuff. It would be alright.

The Cisco crowd have been fan-wanking about AVB support on the Catalyst 4500E, which would be totally awesome, except that Cisco themselves seem to have no intention of actually building it in the foreseeable future.
Hey look, I learned how to multi-quote
I have a friend that is thinking about using raspberry pi for something. I didn't even think about this. I might look into it, seems doable if Tuner Studio has good linux support.
Like the integrated electronic one DIYautone has for sale?
As cool as that could be, I lack the funding and the
's to complete such a task.

DIY doesn't offer anything like that. I'm talking completely separate from Megasquirt, just an easy to use stand alone boost controller. Like things that Greddy/Apexi/etc. offer, but perhaps at a better price point (if possible).
I am in the same boat except I dont have to make something. I either need to do a project which implements a solution that benefits my organization or do a research paper on a topic of my choosing related to strategic initiatives. Has to be publishing worthy when its done. I have to submit the title on tuesday and a prospectus a week after that, final product is do sometime in may. I am scared.

My thoughts, if you want to keep it miata.
Design a warning system like what I'm trying to do in my build thread, but instead of taking the shitty/easy/heavy approach like I am, make the brains of it work on a micro controller. Basically it's a warning system that monitors a lot of things, and tells you if they go out of spec. Coolant temp and pres, fuel pres, oil temp and pres, knock, SC belt slip, AFR, EGT, trans temp, diff temp, etc. Has green/yellow/red indicator system.

What you just described is exactly what I'm working on now. a whole bunch of temps and pressures and other goodies with a custom threshold and stage warning lights for each. Plus with all the inputs and can do control systems too such as water meth or intercooler misting.
Bump from the grave??
