Default Computer Nerds Assemble

So i was carrying my laptop in my backtop, slipped on some ice landed on my back and broke the screen. So laptop shopping now. My laptop had a Intel M processor (part of the centrino crap), and i loved it, battery life was great and ran cool.

I need to know about processors, ram and hd stuff hasnt changed but I dont recognize anything about processors. (other than celerons are still crap)

Basically intel stuff is what im focusing on.

let me get this straight....you only broke the screen?? If thats the case you can usually buy a used one off ebay to replace it with. Its a very VERY simple install.

If you are looking for an "excuse" :-P to buy a new laptop go for core 2 duo.

Ya, what ^ said. I kinda had the same thing happen to me. I was gonna buy a new screen but insted I just bought a 17" LCD monitor. Then I ripped out the old screen and now my laptop is more or less a desktop. But the point is, you can get a screen really cheep off of ebay.

problem with the screen is that the cheapest one is $200+shipping with no guarentee that it works when i get it. All are as is. Stupid WUXGA

But i still need to know about these processors. Why the 2duo of the duo? and why over the solo?

dual core can do more info...or actually more processes at once, its not that much faster though...or so they say....I dunno, I'm not a fan of the Intel chips...I'm an AMD guy

If I understand correctly, dual core processors essentially act through parallel computing when the need arises. I've heard that it hasn't caught on with software developers much yet, so there isn't much out there that can take advantage of it yet. But let me say, some of the finite element stuff I do at work...well, I wouldn't want to be doing it without a dual-core!

I run an Dual Core AMD Athlon 64X2 4200+. Its a little quicker than my old Athlon 64 3200+. All I really do is surf the net and rip dvds. Its nice since i have 2 DVD RW drives and I will shrink and decrypt in one drive while burning in the other.

I just got the lowest of the low toshiba satellite from Best Buy, $399 in store only. Luckily the store in Ames was one of the few in Iowa that had any on hand.

All that I'll add is avoid the celeron chipsets... such sluggish processors.

If I remember correctly the Celeron is the lowest performer when they cull through and test the Pentium chips. Only part of the chip is working in the first place.
