I bet it's the starter, you should replace that.

chpmnsws6 07-23-2012 08:33 AM

New starter still doesn't explain why it died in the first place.

Some of the new aftermarket starters will have a "ZING" to them.

Who knows, I'm not questioning it because it runs/starts well now. Considering I had to jump the car that first morning it died on me on the road, and the way it was sort of intermitent when the tow driver was able to jump it and so was I that second time, I'm assuming the solenoid was behaving oddly and shorted out majorly while I was driving on its own.

yeah, it makes a new distinct noise that im not used to and turns over very quickly now. (doesn't help that I have a completely blown motor mount.)

Now I can wait out being the first owner of a used 2012 Ford Focus ST...otherwise, if I had to get something today, I'd get a used Mazdaspeed 3.

Used turbo Veloster. You can get one for pennies next spring...

Braineack 07-23-2012 08:51 AM

I don't want to be a 30 year old white guy driving something made for 16 year old asain kids with bleached hair and flat brimmed hats.

and it's still a hyundai and cant compete is terms of performance, comfort, cargo room, mpgs, and fun factor when compared to the focus st.

chpmnsws6 07-23-2012 08:52 AM

Sorry, I forgot how old you were. Not sure if they have a cane holster. How do your hips hold up to pushing the clutch? :D

Braineack 07-23-2012 08:53 AM

I'm thick boned, dont you worry. (at that's what my mom told me)

Braineack 07-23-2012 08:55 AM

also my wife might quesiton my sexuality if I brought home that hyundai.

You own and drive a Miata. Your homosexuality has already been confirmed.

Braineack 07-23-2012 08:59 AM

I dont own a miata. Joke's on you!

let's just say the veloster would be the nail in the coffin. And right now, I'm like Will Smith and Tom Cruise in terms of questionable preferences.

NA6C-Guy 07-23-2012 09:07 AM

I'm going to jinx your ass and say it will reoccur again soon. I don't understand how the starter would cause the initial issue. I'm still betting on a bad cell(s) in the battery, and you just jostled it around enough to make it start working again for the moment. I've tested many a battery with a load tester and had a battery pass, then test it again seconds later and have it fail... then again and it passes, then fails, so on and so forth.

I'm feeling negative today, so I jinx you!

Braineack 07-23-2012 09:18 AM

I was listening to Gwar today. I turned the sub up and the windows down.

I have until Oct before my 2 year warrenty on the battery is exhausted.

well I started with the Snot tribute album, but it wasnt very good and switched to gwar.

you know what "ST" stands for in car parlance?

GT is Gran(d) Touring

GTS is Gran(d) Touring Sport

ST is "Secretary Transport"

So

good luck!

Braineack 07-23-2012 10:31 AM

I heard it was super tard.

Braineack 07-23-2012 02:35 PM

looks like the veloster does win in MPG, and it can come in matte gray. that's kinda cool.

still. after seeing them up close and personal at the car show in Jan, I crossed it off my list.

I am surprised you can't ordere a veloster "murdered" and with stretched tires.

seriously, flat gray?

they must have done some consumer focus groups 5 years ago when it was also lame.

I kinda like it.

Rumor is his starter is dieing again. I think he should check his battery.

Braineack 08-22-2012 11:33 AM

If a battery can cause a starter to sound like Min is starting the car with a sawzall, then I'll start to be concerned with the battery.

y8s 08-22-2012 03:21 PM

have you tried having Min start the car with a sawzall?

Braineack 08-22-2012 03:26 PM

It might work better...

Braineack 08-22-2012 03:37 PM

ha.

maybe a week or two of having this starter installed, I noticed it wasn't spinning smoothly. I could hear a weird grinding/hollow/resonate noise along with it.

Then it was having trouble starting, where it would hang while cranking and sometimes just stop and kinda slam stopped.

yesterday i had the same, turn key, then lose all power happen. I pulled the 12v cable from the battery, replaced it, and was able to get the car started.

it was fine this morning and did the same no-power thing at lunch...I'm now driving the miata without a/c. I plan on pulling the starter and getting another replacement and see how it goes.

then i just need to get it to pass inspection and ill sell it in the next few weeks and buy a wrx. Ill need help with that...i know nothing about them.

im waiting to see pictures of this: Used 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX w/VDC For Sale in Owings Mills MD | JF1GH74658G810571

I want a pearl white one. I'd prefer a 2011, but I'd also prefer keeping it under 20K. Some 08-09 I've seen are ugly as sin. I'd almost rather a 06-07 wagon over the 08-09, I need to drive them all first I suposse.

blaen99 08-22-2012 03:48 PM

Holy crap, Faefae has infected Brainy into joining the subie club?

18psi 08-22-2012 03:49 PM

08 is fail year. you want 09+ or 06-07

Braineack 08-22-2012 03:53 PM

what happened between 08 and 09 that matters?

18psi 08-22-2012 03:59 PM

fail turbo
fail suspension
probably other stuff I don't really care about..but still.
it retains the td04 while adopting the "new" style setup (plastic mani, fail tmic, etc) of the 09+. Said td04 is a ---- hair larger than the previous td04's, and only made for the 08 year. makes like 5hp more or something stupid.
suspension is about as stiff as a camry's.....body roll out the wahoo

probably other stuff too, but like i said no one even cares about 08's anymore because of their shortcomings.
I tuned like 1 08 and the dude didn't even know they were so much different than the 09s. now he's upgrading to 09+ turbo and other stuff

if you get a sweet deal on one (and I mean REALLY good) then get it then slap on the vf52 from an 09+ and get tuned accordingly

Braineack 08-22-2012 04:04 PM

Car will remain stock for life more than likely. but thats good know about the 08, ill avoid.

18psi 08-22-2012 04:06 PM

2011-2012. Solid stage1 tune (difference is big and car otherwise stock) DONE

Its what I would do if in your shoes.

For rizzell

y8s 08-22-2012 04:18 PM

so to sum up this thread:

car wont start
it's the battery
nope, not the battery
nevermind (weeks go by)
car wont start again
replace with wrx

mgeoffriau 08-22-2012 06:07 PM

At least if he buys a WRX, it'll come with a different battery.

Efini~FC3S 08-23-2012 10:44 AM

11+ WRX hatch is sooo much nicer than the older WRXs,Foresters, etc.

Nicer to drive, better FE, better road noise/wind noise

I heart

but I'll stick with my FOZ because I can't afford newer WRX

Reverant 08-23-2012 11:02 AM

I still don't believe he will actually pay for one. You know, with money, checks, or whatever.

Braineack 08-23-2012 11:11 AM

I prefer the styling of the 2011-2012, but there's a huge price just that comes along with it. around 5K...but yes, I WILL buy one. you'll see.

I'm still interested in the 06-07 wagon, but would rather stick with the latest model. Or i just buy a really cheap MS3, they are a really good value, but I really want the AWD i decided.

curly 08-23-2012 11:21 AM

What happened to the Focus ST? Too long of a wait?

And why not the prettier '09+ Ralliart? Are they still too expensive? A 2010 evo is supposedly a good buy at 23k. Not that you'll find one that cheap...

Braineack 08-23-2012 11:28 AM

pretty much. I figured I can get the WRX now, and in a year or so when the focus has finally been out for a while I can decide to trade in for it, which I doubt i will.

ralliart is automatic paddle shifters only IIRC, and hard to find. I'd want the wagon. I have a thing for getting a hatch right now. So I was looking at the: mazdaspeed3, r32, focus ST, wrx, v70r... and that's about it.

I want to go with an AWD car, so that limits it even further :)

curly 08-23-2012 11:36 AM

Ok, my next suggestion is a older saab. You're quirky enough, the '94-02(?) 900/9-3 is dirt cheap, and turbo charged. And it's an awesome hatch. Basically a 2 grand Swedish ms3.

Then get your focus.

Braineack 08-23-2012 11:38 AM

I'll pull a faelflora and just go get an RS4 or something.

18psi 08-23-2012 11:51 AM

omg I'm going to murder you if you get a stupid effin saab.

sorry curly, no offense whatsoever, but OMG you keep flinging those pieces of sh!t at everyone asking about getting another car, and they just plain suck dongs man.

triple88a 08-23-2012 02:10 PM

So you gonna make a new thread asking what to get and then get another miata?

Braineack 08-23-2012 02:15 PM

no. i need a new DD, not another miata.

if I were to buy a miata, it would be y8s's NB. and i dont need to jerkies to tell me what to buy. just need info on what im looking at cause i dunno about anything.

curly 08-23-2012 08:45 PM

I know, I've suggested them far too many times.

I however, have fond memories of them. You can get a lot of car for the price. I'm sure now that it's been almost 10 years since I've had one, they're different and crappier than I remember, but still a fun turbo charged option.

Braineack 08-26-2012 08:46 AM

Actually plenty of 2010 pearl white options in my area right now under 50K on the clock. I think I could get one easily for under 20K. So that makes me pretty happy right now.

But I need to go and get my car running again and past inspection. but i so busy!

I brought the starter back to Advance and when they bench tested it, it blew the breaker at the store. I told them this was likely to happen.

When they finally got the machine up and running, the starter would barely turn and you could here the machine pulling tons of amps and the lights in the store were dimming a bit.

Also the starter had tons of soot all over the blades, so the solenoid/motor were definitely burning up.

Got the new one on and it sounds like it has for the last 12 years and the car is still kicking. So I just need to get it past safety inspection today.

Sucks, every time I go under it I find more crap that needs fixing. It needs two cv boots, the exhaust is about to fall off from rust and it's still leaking oil from something...

18psi 09-04-2012 08:36 AM

That's what happens on a high mile frequently used and abused daily.

Get that ish sold like yesterday. Its pointless to fix every little thing, much easier to just drop price when selling because people are cheap and won't appreciate all the little things being fixed and in good shape like some of us do.

Braineack 09-04-2012 08:39 AM

oh im not fixing it. just stating.

just need it to get me around for a bit until the miata can get the a/c fixed. Then I'll take my stereo and speakers out, clean it up, and put it on the market.

If it doesn't sell in the meantime while im looking for a car, I'll just trade it in or drop it off at carmax and they can deal with it.

triple88a 09-04-2012 07:33 PM

Well you can mount some 22s on it and drive it till it rots to pieces. It would look fairly normal.

Braineack 09-05-2012 10:47 AM

it's already rocking 17s bro.

lol it finally failed for motor mounts, got by at least 4 inspections when i knew they were toast. They demonstrated to me how bad they were and it was funny to watch the motor deflect about 12" when the reved the throttle with the e-brake on.

No joke, I need to get a vid of it before I swap them out. Gotta love ebay, all 3 for $80 shipped when one is $90 at advance auto.

then i gotta swap on my spare wheels from the miata, cause I also failed for a bald tire.

Braineack 09-07-2012 09:43 AM

why cant this be a 6-spd?

Volvo : V70 R AWD V70 in Volvo | eBay Motors

seriously? argh.

This is the best option "local" in a 6-spd:

weak.

18psi 09-07-2012 09:51 AM

Don't get a black car for a dd. It suxorz to maintain and will look like poo if you don't.

Braineack 09-07-2012 10:00 AM

I has a garage and water hose.

18psi 09-07-2012 10:14 AM

Your laziness renders both useless.

Seriously, I had to wash my black cars like 2x a week to keep em nice lookin, I KNOW you're way too lazy for dis

mgeoffriau 09-07-2012 10:17 AM

Black cars look great down here during pollen season.

Braineack 09-07-2012 10:19 AM

I acutally wash my cars quite often. Ask y8s, I used his a hose a lot this summer :)

I would prefer white, but beggers cant be choosers. It's still more then I want to pay for a 2004 model year, but with only 53K on the look and in that condition I'd consider it. Honestly in the traffic I drive in, I might consider the auto...I'd a least have to find a local v70r auto and a least give it a whirl... and that's an issue since there are none within 50 miles of me.

Chances are I'll still end up with a WRX, but there's something about those things that I cant resist.
