In regards to Profesional grade tool boxes,My Box at work Is a 526 top and a 5 drawer bottom.... Kennedy I have a 2 drawer kennedy at the house for carry around purposes and a very old 10 drawer Kennedy to store the Other things In...They are absolutly the best quality.Pricey But the Best often is.

My local Costco has 2 at the moment. One is around $300 and is about 3 feet tall and stainless. It is the same brand as the storage shelf units they sell. I forgot the brand but it's very good quality. Then they have a kirkland unit for $650 or so that is very tall. I recommend checking them out. Costco seems to always sell very good quality merchandise

I have the 44" HF roller, top box, and 7 drawer side box. It's honestly much better quality than the 20 year old Craftsman 26" set it replaced. I've had it for a couple of years, and have no real complaints, except that it's full... The only minor issue I've had is the detent on one of the drawers is a little soft, and sometimes doesn't hold.

For a hobbyist, I don't think you can do better for the $$ unless you luck into a high end box from a stupid seller.

I would have bought the 56", but they didn't have a top box for it at the time. My advice is buy the biggest box you can afford and have room for. You'll have it full before you know it!

Like-minded opinion here.

I have the 56" HF tool box and it is certainly on par or better than my fathers old Craftsman Prof or Mac boxes. The quality of the drawer slides falls short of the big dollar boxes (e.g., Snap-On, Lista, etc.) but overall it's a great box for my casual needs. I know a couple BMW techs who use them day to day without issue so the durability seems to be reasonable.

If I wasn't actively pouring money into my miata, I would have bought a Lista box as they are oh-so-sweet ... but like most things in life, nice and cheap are contradictory.

Before you go to HF... print out a 20% off coupon. On the coupon, it specifically omits "not valid on sale items"... I've never had a problem using a 10% of 20% off coupon on anything at HF, including items already on sale. Click on the coupon and it will open in a second window to print.

I think I bought the most expensive thing at $400 a couple weeks ago that the 20% off still applies to. And it took the 20% off the $400 sale price, not the $500 regular price.

So Who cares...Right now MSC has Kennedy boxes on sale My top Box was $250 and My bottom $580=$830,Minus the $35 rebate card=$795.....Ok I Know that Is Higher than the HF boxes at $600...But Its a HF Box.IF you buy a Roller box from MSC this Month They Are giving The 2 drawer flip top "tackle" box to You for free.That Beats any deal that has been presented,Top quality tool storage With Tubular Locks ...Not Much More than the disposable boxes sold at HF or The Like...You do the math...

And Everything I have ever bought or seen that has been purchased from HF is Disposable...If the Quality you expect can be produced by the dumbest 3rd world child you could Imagine...then HF is for You...If Not You may have to Do a little more research.
My Kennedy box has about 80lbs of steel plates in the Bottom drawer(Knife Grinder Project),still slides out and still locks when I lock the cabinet,still rolls around the floor the 20 or so feet evrynight.American made=highquality at premium price.But in this instance they are not much more than the HF,or Husky boxes.

Soooo,In what way am I wrong?Buying a good Toll box Once is inferior to buying a china box 2-3 times?That My Box Doesnt Roll witha Huge amount of weight in it?That MSC has tool boxes on sale?
I dont Know what you are talking about,and Why do You have To fight thru my Posts??Do the Periods throw you off?I have ADD and That Is my way of Making it sound Like It Happens In my head.
Oh and By the way,No professional mechanic Ive EVER seen has a cheap Box at the shop the work for.Ive worked for3 dealerships and My Father was diesel mechanic.

Edit:OOps sorry They are Husky Boxs at the Machines and the drawers are falling out of them,One guy has a US general(HF) box and He gets made fun of.When I just asked EVERYBODY in the shop No one said they would supplant their current box witha new HF box(5 Kennedy's,1 Craftsman)

The machine shop I used to work at was converting from kennedy boxes to the Homak boxes I mentioned earlier. Lots and lots of weight, as in tons and tons of tooling bushings for turret lathes, gun drills, bars... The mill guys would set a whole kurt vise in the big drawers.

I was never impressed with the kennedy boxes, the Homak boxes are cheaper and hold the weight better. Was hilarious how fast the owner wanted to convert to the china boxes after I ordered one.

I'm not interested in what people at your shop say. They sound like they'd be right at home on Garage Journal where the worst internet jingoism i've ever seen inhabits.

Here's the facts: The closest equivalent Kennedy box (40", so... smaller.) costs 5.43x what the US General 44" box does.

We aren't professional wrenches on this board. Chances of anyone living long enough to see if the Kennedy box lasts 5.43x as long as the US General box are slim to none.

Another fact: If even the short-sighted narrowminded morons on Garage Journal (Buy Murican even if it sucks bad, because... MURICA!) can have a huge thread with almost nothing but incredible glowing positive reviews favorably comparing the US General boxes to Matco, MAC, Snapon, etc... you can be assured that the boxes are no bullshit.

80lbs in a single drawer isn't impressive at all.

There's tons of pictures in that thread of BIG DUDES STANDING in their toolboxes. In one drawer. US General.

All you're doing is just spouting stuff in hard-to-read posts because you think it sounds cool and you don't know any better.

I don't care what you buy. I think it's great that you like your Kennedy. Everyone should have equipment that they love using. I also don't care if OP buys a HF box. What does bother me is ridiculous baseless opinions passed off as facts.

I have the 11 drawer HF set that you usually find for about $159 these days. I consider it not quite a mistake, but close. The set is cheap, flimsy and has several very annoying flaws. Then again, it's about what you'd expect from a cheap set. It does light duty in the basement shop for hand tools. Since the basement shop is mostly dedicated to small craft work, the tools are small and light. Lots of drawers, but not much weight capacity means it suffices for the job. Barely.

I have red Craftsman stuff out in the garage. The difference in quality is night and day. Then again, so is the price. I think I paid nearly triple for the Sears stuff, and that was 10-12 years ago. But I have never had a problem with it, it's never pissed me off, and that alone is worth a lot. Stores auto shop type tools: wrenches, sockets and other medium weight items. Never a problem with capacity, ever.

I recently purchased a sears 4 drawer cabinet for the shop. More of a stand for my scroll saw and buffer as much as tool storage. It was cheap ($129 on sale), but it's nowhere near the same level of quality of the older stuff. Thinner, more flimsy, more easily dented, less capacity. Once again, you get what you pay for, but I still think it's better than the HF stuff.
