When I got the truck, I got about 23-24 MPG. Little did I know they had it filled with premium. I filled up with 87 (being cheap), and the mileage dropped off to 16-17 immediately. And that was me still treating it nice, because I just got it.
When I read up on it, I tested using fill-ups of 87, 89 and 92. Mileage is about 21-22 when I use 89 and am nice to it. Mileage is slightly better at the 92, but not enough to offset the higher cost. Mileage sucks when I use 87, and it isn't that much cheaper.
Because I am old and set in my ways, I use the same gas at the same pump at the same station. I write down the elapsed miles and gallons at fill-up, and have done so for decades. It's actually a great way to catch problems, because if mileage starts dropping off, you know there's something that needs attention.

If you're implying that getting better mileage with higher octane is a myth, I'll disagree for the most part. Many cars out there will indeed get better mileage (not just power) with higher octane.
And I have basically the best parts, everything was carefully selected for my car, she gets nothing but the best
What all you lookin for? so I dont have to waste time making a huge list
300 off idle, what a slouch

what is an octane myth?

Umm, yes. Almost everything I have will fit your car

Well, it's not so crazy anymore. My Toyota pickup runs on anything from 86 to 94 octane. It's supposedly tuned for the higher stuff, but the computer changes things to use the lower ratings without knocking.

Ok maybe it was a bad example, even my 94 s10 has adaptive timing and can benefit from higher octane. You get my point though.
Do you even internet bro? really?
I have heard everything under the sun about octane. The general populous has no idea that its nothing more than a rating of a fuels resistance to detonation, so myth surrounds it.
edit- theres even articles written about the subject
http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/gas...ane-myths.html
"In the world of automobiles, it is tempting to associate higher numbers with higher quality. After all, more horsepower and more miles per gallon are a better thing, which feeds into our perception that more impressive octane ratings also equal higher performance. Gasoline companies understand this mentality and do nothing to dissuade drivers from it, labeling 87 octane gas ‘Regular,’ and 91 or 93 octane ‘Super’ in an attempt to reinforce this way of thinking. After all, since ‘Super’ is priced higher than ‘Regular,’ it’s in their best interest to convince as many people as they can that paying a bit extra means getting better quality gas.Unfortunately, this is where the myth of what gasoline’s octane rating really means creeps into the picture. Time and again, people will be told that high octane fuel burns cleaner or more completely, and that it will give them extra power and better fuel mileage than Regular octane gasoline because it contains more ‘energy.’ These blanket statements are simply not true. In fact, the octane rating for gasoline has nothing to do with the amount of power locked inside of it – it actually relates to just how much a fuel can be compressed before igniting. The higher the number, the less likely it is to ignite under pressure."
