They day I took my boy cat home hew as so happy, he rubbed us with his head so much. and he loved his new friend in our girl cat, even though she wasn't found of him. He still love to rub his head against our and does it today cause he loves us so much for giving him cat food; and we love him.

I dont not love wiping his butt, but, I really do.

So in the end, gender doesn't matter a whole lot, cats are awesome, dogs are also awesome but you can't leave them alone for as long.

My roommate already has a dog, and my lifestyle doesn't lend itself well to a dog just yet. I have also never owned an animal, so I think a cat is a good first step. Now if I could just convince the roommate that she isn't allergic to cats...

How long would you leave your pet alone? We crate our dog for 14 hours at a time when my gf and I both work 12s. Thankfully we don't do that too often, but if they're crate trained from a puppy they like it. Our dog will nap in his crate if I leave the garage open.

I've left my cats alone for 4 days. that's about the max I'd feel comfortable with--they are dumb and would forget to eat.

I left Polly at home for 5 days once without a human to check on her. I don't like it, but what's the alternative? Should I have left her on the street? Being bored occasionally is a small price to pay for a drum of food, air conditioning, and a human punching-bag/rag-doll to abuse. I left Polly at home for about 2.5 days (no more than two nights) throughout January. I don't like it, but she can deal with it. That bitch is cray as hell.

i've left my cats alone for about 3-4 days a few times. hell, they ran out of food one of the times cause i wasn't expecting to be gone long and just didn't leave out a lot of food. they were hungry, but they lived.

I used to leave my cat at home all week while I worked out of town. Dad would show up every 2 days to refill the food and water dishes, and scoop the liter. I hated it, but it didn't seem to faze the cat. All my cats have been let outdoors whenever they want, but are kept indoors overnight. All have reached at least 17 years old. Last old one was nearly 20, and she was one tough old broad.

To the OP: I've usually had male cats (always fixed) but the one female I had acted no differently from the males, except to be a little more of a loner. None sprayed except the female, but that was health issues. Once that was taken care of, no more problems.

I work 9 hours a day, and I do stuff in the evenings and on weekends a lot. If I was going to leave a cat alone for more than 2.5 days, I would have somebody check in on it and clean the litterbox, but aside from weekend trips, I wouldn't leave it alone for more than a few hours at a time.

Like somebody said, get a stray. It will appreciate it's new home. American shorthairs are generally more active, going into "attack cat" mode and "hunting" things like you, bugs, anything small enough to be batted around. Dogs are cool to. but only if they put up with the cat.
If the cat is going to be left alone a lot, get 2, they will entertain each other.

phillyb 02-06-2012 03:21 PM

agreed...definitely get two cats!
