My fear with Dvorak is that I'll spend all this time learning it only to find that the people who notice a speed improvement are the ones around 50wpm, and the ones up closer to 90 won't see as much improvement.
Oh well, if I can learn it and save myself some carpal tunnel or something, then it's worth it.

I don't really understand the benefit here.
If someone already knows how to type using the home keys (index fingers on F and J) without looking at the keyboard (myself) why would I ever want to re-learn a different way?
