I ate both haggis and black pudding in Scotland. No pics, because it really isn't very photogenic (some might say slightly frightening). But I liked both, and will certainly eat them again.

I didn't try sushi until my early 20s. I'd always thought it seemed a tad gross. I was fortunate that my first encounter was at a very good sushi restaurant, on a business trip, with one of the sales guys. Can't remember the name of the place, but I remember that in the pre-GPS era it took us forever to find it.
I was hooked from day 1.

I've been hesitant to post this because it's maybe too braggy but this thread is all about that so I'll do it anyway.
Wed night last week my wife dragged me to a work reception to celebrate a bunch of lobbying at congresspeeps to get them to take steps to address hunger in america.
The lobbying was primarily done by chefs from around the country and was organized by her the org she works for. There were also a couple of congresspeople there but that's not the fun part. It was also held at a rooftop farm in the middle of DC with a view of the washington nationals playing baseball. which is cool but not the fun part either.
The fun part started when her boss said "go downstairs, we're going to dinner". We had already planned to go grab a bite at this restaurant Salt Line that just opened up. We were jazzed because it is a) co-owned by her favorite baseball player (Ryan Zimmerman) and b) just rated the best burger in DC. Turns out the dinner they were dragging us to was the same place. They had a reservation for like 10. The party turned into 21. And many of them were chefs.
Jenn hesitated about where to sit so I told her "just pick a place and people will follow" and she hesitated more. SO I simply called out that the cool kids were sitting at my table and pulled her over. A handful of the chefs sat there too. And being chefs, they both had Strong Opinions on what to order as well as highly developed senses of taste in food.
One dude, Daniel Asher from River & Woods in Boulder, CO took the lead with some partnering from Tiffany Derry of Dallas (from a couple seasons of Top Chef--I think I've mentioned that Jenn's org was founded by Tom Collichio--who was also supposed to be there, but was unable to make it for Legitimate Reasons). Dan the chef saw the menu, heard the waiter (FAN-*******-tastic waiter.. knowledgeable and patient) and decided that there were too many delicious things on the menu so we'd have to order a **** load of them for all of us to share.
Shortly after he ordered, Jenn's boss leaned to us with a half nod and said "Don't worry, we'll pick it up." so we relaxed. Of course they were, but it's nice to hear.
The food was nothing short of phenomenal. Here is a short, partial list of what we got:
raw oysters
razor clam ceviche (holy ****--with puffed rice yum)
these things called "Stuffies" (3 baked mahogany clams, smoked linguica, lemon, bread, parmesan)
Crispy farm egg (farro, fresh chick peas, garlic scapes, dill caraway yogurt--soft boiled and rolled in crumbs and fried)
Spicy soft shell crab
grilled octopus
scallops with gooseberry chutney
NEW ENGLAND SMASH BURGER (2 ground chuck patties, american cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, sesame bun -- **** me this was amazing.. you have no idea)
Crispy skin rockfish
Uni Carbonara (bucatini, yolks, house bacon, garlic scapes, black pepper, grana padano--also amazing!)
some bread--yeah I know--but it was really good. light, sweet, fluffy, delicious.
I'm sure there was more but when there are this many things it's hard to recall them. so much of it was simply beyond delicious. ALSO when you see something on the menu and you don't know what it is... there are a bunch of chefs at your table to simply tell you. bucatini is like fat spaghetti but with a hole (lumen?) down the middle.
I didn't take any pictures. I was too busy enjoying the food and bonding with some great personalities Dan and Tiffany. It's so much fun to enjoy great food with people who really know and appreciate it too.
It's also nice when a chef gives you props for ordering herradura silver neat.
At the end of the night after all the chefs did their chefy selfies together, Jenn's boss called oen of the owners over (they grew up in the same small town in Maine) and he invited us in for a nightcap--we declined because babysitter and weeknight but **** man. Jenn did get his card. You KNOW she's going to work it to get time with the baseball guy.
I hope that Jenn will be forced to do more "work" like this.
Seriously though, if you're in the DC area, get that burger.

honestly, my biggest repulsion to sushi was the cucumber and seaweed. Although large chunks of uncooked fish (sashimi) still does not sound appetizing to me. I will do a lox bagel, but i dont like it to be slimy and greasy, a lot of sliced meats turn me off that way -- especially when i was in italy.
