Just paid off the Lava Orange Mazdaspeed Miata 10 minutes ago. Not exactly sure why you guys are the first people to know this???

Anyway, house was paid off about 6 months ago and it is all gravy from here on out.

Import Al 09-11-2009 03:01 PM

Congrats, man... I'm on the same path, just $23K to go!! *Seething in jealous envy*

You're a fucken dick. Just kidding. Actually, you're the man. I owe about $150,000 on my home and property, but all my vehicles are paid for. Next year I am getting married in July with a ritzy pricy wedding. How about you upload pics of your car?

swingdancr 09-11-2009 03:31 PM

Trying to sell my Miata partially to lose the car payment, and partially cause I want to build a kit.

That'll leave us with just a house payment.

y8s 09-11-2009 03:54 PM

Being debt free is a liberating feeling. Sincere congratulations.

No he didn't.

You helped, I helped, every member of the tax paying community helped. He didn't pay shit, not even a thin dime. Guaranteed. Bet you lunch! :fawk:

Scuba_Steve 09-11-2009 05:41 PM

Congratulations. My only debt is my mortgage which will be paid in full in 1.5 years.

Qckslvr 09-11-2009 05:46 PM

Congrats :D

15 more years on mortgage, and I will be debt free as well. Seriously looking to sell though and go back to renting.

rmcelwee 09-11-2009 05:59 PM

Details:
42 years old, same job for 20 years, $60K salary, wife stays at home and doesn't work, no kids.

1999 - $125,000 in credit card debt (financed a business via 20 credit cards) and $40,000 in mortgage (cheap house)

2003 - $185,000 mortgage (credit card debt paid off when I sold the business) on a larger house and $20,000 truck loan

So, 10.5 years of struggle. Paid the new house off in 6 years. We live well within our means. No movies, no dinner, not much in the way of bling. I wear jeans and a t-shirt every day. I drive a $1500 Geo Metro. My wife does not work but "owns" the 2005 MX5 and 2006 Toyota Tacoma. We will keep the vehicles until they fall apart. She gets a few nice vehicles but only owns 3 pairs of shoes and isn't the typical high maintenance woman. We pay $10 a month for cell phone service and, until a couple of weeks ago, $15 a month for basic cable. We worked hard to get to this point and are good examples of when Dave Ramsey says "people think you're weird" (because you are a cheap ass and don't waste money). Tonight I will crack open the Southern Comfort and celebrate!

We got married by a Justice of the Peace (I think it was $45 or so), ate at Huddle House and stayed in a Motel 8 on our wedding night. After 18 years my wife still does not have a diamond on her finger (we both wear $50 wedding bands). We have never purchased each other anniversary presents (or Christmas, Valentines Day, Birthday, etc). DO NOT get your wife started thinking that fancy things make a good marriage. I've got some friends who are getting divorced after less than 2 years. He took her on all kinds of cruises, bought a $3000 engagement ring, gives her everything she wants. My wife knows she can have everything she wants but she just doesn't want anything (except for a Lava Orange MSM).

Congratulations man. I bet that feels nice. Due to my income I get laughed at at work because I drive a 2001 Toyota echo, and then went and bought a 15 year old miata instead of an M3. I've been out of school for two years and have a plan to pay down vehicle, student loans, then house. I think everyone would sacrifice a little more if they stopped for a second and realized how little income one needs to be happy when they aren't shelling it all out in monthly payments.

Once my Xterra is paid off I will then apply that payment to my next smallest loan. Continue and repeat until it stays in my pocket

It's amazing the pressure that is put on Americans in general to carry lots of debt just to keep up with the Jones'. I recently visited with relatives in Ottawa Canada. They put a lot more value in being able to vacation. I noticed a lot fewer flashy cars etc.

pdexta 09-12-2009 01:29 AM

magnamx-5 09-12-2009 01:50 AM

gj man i been debt free for a month now since i paid off my Mazda 3. I always try to keep a minimum of debts imo.

Mach929 09-12-2009 08:10 AM

great work 42 is impressive, I remember when my father paid of his house, i think he was 46, he thought about buying a corvette, then didn't. he's still working and loves the fact he can tell everyone to suck it and not ever work again. I love watching smart financial decisions pay off in the end. Many of my friends make a whole lot more than i do and somehow manage to squander it and have nothing to show for it. I had originally planned on 35 but after some quick math and since i'm turning 29 next friday it's looking like 42 as well. cool this is the wife says i can retire when we pay the house off and she'll continue to work as she truly loves her work.

rmcelwee 11-09-2010 01:34 PM

Well, it lasted for a year and then I had to screw it up. Last week I took a loan ($8300) out of my 401K to buy my new Miata. I'm sure we will get it paid back quickly but paying cash for the car would have completely wiped out all of my savings / emergency fund / etc. Just thought you guys would want to know that I am once again in debt (does it count if you owe yourself the money?).

Are you playing interest on it? If so, yes.

I think the $8300 for what you are buying is well worth the loan. Should be fun once you get it.

rharris19 11-09-2010 01:44 PM

Opportunity cost yes, but debt no. As long as you do save efficiently, then you are allowed to spend a little here and there. That's what the money is there for partially.

neogenesis2004 11-09-2010 01:53 PM

Are you buying Chad's NB?

kenzo42 11-09-2010 01:56 PM

I will have $420k in student loans in about 3 years. Kill me now.

Yes, but the interest is paid to me. So does it count?

There was a $125 fee to take the loan though. I figured it was worth $125 to keep my wife from freaking out that I spent every penny we had saved up over the past year. FWIW, we are contributing 33% of my two week check to the 401K and then sticking $800 of what was left into an emergency account. This means my bank account was getting lower every month but we were trying to catch up a bit in the 401K before the year was out.

You better be planning on installing a lot of boob mods to pay that back and still make a living.

No, the piece of shit V8 conversion that was discussed here:

https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-parts-sale-trade-5/v8-miata-ls1-miata-%2410500-dothan-al-49867/

I got it off ebay for $8150. He's replaced the clutch and fixed the headlights since posting that CL ad.

Yehaw!

SlideRuler 11-09-2010 02:24 PM

I wish I was debt free.

I consider rent and insurance to be debt. Other than that, I own my car, my HDTV, my laptop, etc...

Reverant 11-09-2010 02:26 PM

Currently owing about $500 to the bank and to my CC. Looking to be completely debt-free by the end of the year.

Not a bad price at 8k. PLEASE put a new hood on it and reroute the intake.

I will admit that although I don't like some of the parts on the car, your buy in for a running LS1 miata was about a 1/3rd of the price it is building it yourself...... And that makes me envious :)

I'm looking at it as a big box of parts from which I can build a V8 Miata. It just so happens that I'll be able to drive the box of parts around a bit while I find a nice body/interior to put them in. My rough estimate is that it would cost me $10K to buy all the stuff so coming in at $2K less than that with a lot of the work done (getting the correct length drive shaft, having the headers already welded up, etc) is pretty cool.

gospeed81 11-09-2010 10:52 PM

AWESOME!

Good price on a decent setup. Looks like a fun swap project. Saved money, no waiting, all in a convenient package with a living diagram of where shit goes...but you still get to do it YOUR way.

Have fun.

Yeah, I hope the gamble pays off. I've passed up a few V8s because they were too rough. This one seems like a little massaging will get it (well, the new setup) to where it needs to be. I'll probably drive the car for a year or so before I completely disassemble it. I really wanted to do it all myself but it still won't be an easy road ahead. I think I'll be able to call it "my project" when I finish.

chpmnsws6 11-09-2010 11:20 PM

Luckily he didn't buy the worst part of the bf swap kit... the rear end setup. If you add up the little stuff, you will probably gain another 2-3k on top of that 10k figure pretty easily. I can't wait to watch the progress on it :)

I like the fact that you spent your 1,000th post talking about my new car <G>.

Yeah, if you know me, I'll definitely have a few pictures and web pages devoted to the build. Hell, I've got 126 pictures devoted just to my Geo Metro engine rebuild on my web page!

Nice. I think I have 30 years before I will be debt free. Little to no credit card debt but to many student loans and still no house.

Joseph B 11-10-2010 07:56 AM

I have a total of 36k in debt, including the student loans I've taken out for my masters degree. This amount will increase significantly when my wife and I buy a home next year. However, her entire salary will go to the mortgage once she finishes college and starts working.

Just got my property tax notice in the mail the other day....that SUCKED. Our first year of property tax was rolled into the closing cost so it was "hidden" last year. Not this year.

I understand the purpose of property taxes, but it sure does piss me off that regardless of who "owns" the property (me or the bank), the state can just take it away unless I continue to pay them off every year for the right to not have my property seized.

And with the extended definition of emminent domain that has gotten so popular these days, how comforting it is to know that even if you pay that ransom diligently every year, the government can STILL seize your property so that a developer can put a strip mall there or something.

y8s 11-10-2010 11:56 AM

Well if america didn't like strip malls, that would never happen.

I can't comprehend property taxes, it's a tax to live. Food and clothing are tax exempt in most states, why not exempt property tax? I'm scared to death that Ill work my entire life, retire, and be taxed out of my home..

chricto 11-10-2010 12:13 PM
