Has anyone ever tried to ship one?

Any idea how much it would cost to ship one from Atlanta to southern PA?

Assuming 700 miles each way, that's 1,400 miles total. Figure 30 MPG in that 2000 of yours (taking it nice & easy) for 47 gallons up and back. At $3.80 / gal, call it $179 in fuel, maybe $50 for a hotel room for the night, and probably $20 in meals. So that's $249 in total.

Honestly, attached securely to a Miata is about the only way I'd ship a hardtop. They're surprisingly flimsy when off the car, and don't really like to sit flat.

I shipped a complete rear diff from my Jeep for $110 with Pilot Air Freight, weighed like 210lbs strapped to a pallet. So you should be able to get a decent price with them http://www.pilotdelivers.com/
