I fing did this on a RSX one time. Had to take everything apart and pop the axle back in. Glad you figured it out.

Exact thing happened while installing coilovers on my Forester a month ago. Lined the axle up and slid it back in, took about 30 seconds.

Yah the unfortunate thing is that i tore my CV bootie in the process. leaking grease :(

Not good. If you don't replace it, crap will get in and destroy the CV joint in a hurry.
