have you already done a simple water test? the kits are a few bucks. I need to.

it will help you determine what level of filtering (or softening) you need.

 

i have one built in my fridge, i haven't replaced it in over year....yummy.

 

Yes, and my water is very high in chlorine. levels you would see in pool.

I recently had an Anderson water filtration/softening system installed. Water in my area isn't that bad, but the wife wanted it because of very bad dry skin problems. About 2700 bucks installed.

#1. They have a LOT of room to move on price. Don't accept the first price. Don't accept the second. Dicker like you would for a car, and don't back down. the initial price they quoted me was nearly double what we paid.

#2. You use a lot less soap. Examples? Dishwasher, about 50%. Laundry about 35% Handwashing, you'll use a small dried pea sized drop, and it's still way more than you need. You'll take a shower and use the same quantity only once, and it'll take forever to rinse it off. From then on, you will use a lot less. It's surprising how little you need.

#3. Car washing is better - no water spots, and it sheets off. A lot less soap here, too.

#4. Another unexpected benefit is that due to the elimination of chlorine, my senses of smell and taste are greatly enhanced. So much so that I've started to gain weight like I did when I stopped smoking.

The bad? You have to buy the salt. My system uses potasium, but that is quite a bit more expensive. I figure it's worth it, just to avoid any potential problems with sodium intake.

Another bad, due to the taste/smell thing. The water at my parents house, just down the street now tastes like drinking from a pool. I can't stand the chlorine. Be prepared to bottle some of your own water, or take along a Brita pitcher everywhere.


Be prepared to spend an evening watching their biased "water test" demonstration, and then dickering on the price. Make sure they throw in at least the first years salt/potassium. Buy the biggest filter unit, as that makes the most difference in the taste of the water, and if you go small, you'll have to replace it in a couple of years. The bigger ones (size of a large oxy torch tank) will last for at least 5. Don't spring for their bulk soap deals, it's a ripoff.

 

i got rid of mine. it was a remnant from when my house had well water, don't need it anymore and it was dripping and took up a lot of space. even without it my water is much softer than my parents house

For that price you could get a reverse osmosis system cheaper. My RO system uses $30 filters every 6 months. Not sure which makes more pure water, you may have to do some research.

 

I bought a softener system at Lowes or Home Depot (I can't recall which) and installed it myself. It cost about $500 at that time and installation was a breeze. It took about two hours and a stick of pvc irrigation pipe and a couple of 90* ells. I put it right where the line comes from the street to the house. That was in ~2003 and it still works fine. I add a bag or two of salt from the grocery store every month or two. No big deal. The one I got is about the size of a Weber charcoal grill. In fact, I use a charcoal grill cover over it to protect it from the UV since it resides outside. The brand name is WaterBoss.

I can't stand living without one down here because of the chloramines and the seriously hard water.

If you can change the timing belt on your Miata, this is even easier. Don't pay a bunch of extra money for someone to install something so simple. Water in. Water out. Plug into wall. Done.
