Removing paint off wheel
The previous owner of my wheels painted them black and now the paint is starting to chip. I'd like to totally remove the paint, but I don't want to hurt the original finish on the wheel, so I'm not wanting to use aircraft stripper. I tried using mineral spirits (the low odor kind) but it didn't seem to have an effect, and since the car is my daily driver I'd like to make sure whatever method I use can be done quickly so I'm not driving around with 3 black wheels and 1 plan alloy.
Any ideas on what will work? I'm not getting them sand blasted.
The wheels I've got are the '99-2002 Sport 5-spoke alloy.
Thanks

I just fond some "Klean Strip" premium stripper in my garage that the previous owner must have left, and it stripped the paint within 15 minutes. Be VERY careful if you ever decide to use this stuff, it toke some of the tar off the driveway, srsly.

Did it retain the original finish? I now '90-'93 daises had a clear coat painted on, I would think anything that would destroy a top layer would visually destroy that OEM coat. Maybe the later ones are finished differently.

If you want your wheels to be somewhere between the factory finish and chrome, the stripper liberally + fine wet sanding and/or polishing would do the trick. Personally I like having black wheels so I'm going to put on a few coats of Plasti dip.

Has anyone tried putting spray enamel over several coats of plasti dip? I'm trying to make sure it stays looking good.
