Has anyone ever repurposed large gauge wire for use in serial communications? Something like sending RS485 over #12 wire? I did it once in the past over a short distance, and it worked fine, but I am wondering if there are problems that would show up in a longer run.

How long of a run, and are you staying differential?

If you're trying to go a kilometer at a high datarate, I doubt that you're going to get anything even remotely resembling a balanced 120 ohm pair out of common #12 wire. But if you mean "a few tens of feet," then yeah, 485 is pretty robust.

It is probably no more than 250 feet. I don't have a real good feel because I don't know how the conduits are run. baud rate will be either 1200 or a blistering 9600, depending on the hardware on the remote end. I am going to try to get proper cables pulled, this is more of a last resort option.

Can you run RS485 non-differentially? I thought that was one of the defining features of the standard. We run it half duplex if that is what you mean.

I'm sorry to hear that man. I lost my dad on the 22 of last month.. he was 49. Truth is it doesnt stop hurting. I still remember him looking at me as he drew his last breath like it was yesterday. I wake up sometimes and go out and look in the parking lot that his car isnt there and for a flash i think to my self man hes out to workout early. And as soon as i think that i remember hes not coming back. The other day i heard the kitchen counters clunk at exactly the time he comes home and makes his lunch. 250 feet at 9,600 baud is nothing. You could run RS-232 for that.


It is, but you can run anything non-differentially if you know how to cheat. The "proper" way would be to use baluns on either end, but if you're really fighting dirty, you can just ground one side through a resistor. It's a violation of the standard, but it's often "good enough." (I'm not suggesting that you do this- it was just a question.)

It sounds like you've got a firm handle on this, and for the distance and datarate you're looking at, I strongly suspect* that two untwisted 12awg wires will work fine, provided that there's not a huge amount of incident noise.

I moved out of my moms when i was rather young. She had been sick for over 20 years. She had almost died on a few occasions, i even flew down to florida with my sister to see her in the hospital. It was rough for her. She had foot surgery and it kept her in bed for about 2 months. So her day to day life was already pretty horrible as it was, plus all the pills piled on top.
We buried her this morning. I feel bad for my grandpa, he's lost 2 sons and now a daughter. I wouldn't say she was a great person, but no matter who she is or was i will always love her because of who she was to me.
I almost regret not being close to her but i guess she ruined that for herself when she divorced my dad. Either way i feel little to no pain, i was probably the only one not to cry at the funeral.

The size of the cable, by itself, doesn't matter. It could be argued, in fact, that larger cable is always better since it has a lower resistance-per-foot.

Now, cable size IS a factor in computing impedance, pair-capacitance, velocity of propagation, and a bunch of other stuff that matters a lot in high-frequency circuits and can largely be ignored in low-frequency circuits. And 9,600 baud is most certainly a low-frequency circuit.

There's no reason, for instance, why you couldn't run ethernet over 4/0 welding cable, provided that you twist it properly and adjust the insulation and spacing to achieve the required specs.

Sidebar: Thanks to all those who pressured me to buy an '01-'05 Miata. The chassis rigidity really is as good as everyone claims, and I am finding that the engine in stock form makes nearly enough power. Anyone who claims that the late NB is less rev-happy, less tossable, etc., than a '90-'93 car is an idiot. Yes, it is larger and heavier than a '90. So is a Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

Eh. My 01 is like a Buick compared to my 94. Even my 94 in stock form, though it was an R package car. I guess the few upgrades the NB has makes it seem a bit more fun. It is way more rev happy though, i very often find the fuel cut without realizing it.

So, it turns out that Direct Exhaust Injection is actually a real thing. Specifically, it's an experimental form of Air Independent Propulsion for non-nuclear submarines. Take the exhaust, condense the water vapor and CO2 out of it, add back in some pure oxygen to re-balance it, and send it right back into the engine again. No intake, no tailpipe.

So I was driving my GF to work today and some asshole proceeds to cut me off, it wasn't horrible so I didn't think too much of it. I look over as he moved over to the next lane and he looks like he is about to try some shit so I haul ass past him.

I think it's over and next thing I know he is on my ass. Like two feet away. I try to separate from him as much as possible without getting reckless. There is some traffic so I am hoping that helps. It doesn't. He then proceeds to get around me, roll down the window and throw change at my car.

Now the great part. I have a dash camera, and it is ALL ON TAPE. This scum is going down. Calling the police department today and handing over the video. I'll post it later if I can (not sure how that works if it is evidence or whatever).

Anyways so happy I have the dash cam now. This is the first time in my life where it would have helped me and I had one. Always thought I was wasting my time getting the GoPro out and keeping it charged and the memory card empty. It all pays off today.

I have a chip in the window and I think some bumper damage as well. We were going high way speeds when he did it, so it hit with a lot of force. I hope that shit didn't hit my intercooler, but I plan to inspect it more later today after I see what the Police say.

I worked with a guy that got pissed when a car was riding his bumper so he opened his sunroof and tossed a handful of change back that hit square across the windshield. Turns out it was a unmarked police car. It was not a good day for him.

I'm cool with road rage type shit until it involves damaging someones property. I've had this car all of two months, and some low life scum has to fuck it up because they don't care about anyone but themselves? I am so happy I have it on video or else this kid would see zero consequences.

The operator (non-emergency number) said there was nothing I could do. I lol'd and said let me talk to an officer. He was all on board and told me to send the video to him ASAP and he would at the very very least go knock on the door and talk with them. I am going out to check damage now, if the spots in the window look like they could crack, or the bumper is damaged I am pressing as many charges as I can. Everyone makes mistakes, but you learn from the consequences.

I'm willing to bet that guy was in a 'Murican car.
