Lulz, last time I used a hashtag was to forward my landline to a cellphone so I could call while using a 56k dialup modem :giggle:

So, can anyone help me out by listing some alternatives to ebay that have decent traffic? I think I'm about to start making and selling crokinole (Canadian table top game, gaining popularity) boards and I'd like to not have to give ebay 10% of my profit, plus deal with them and paypal. Anybody dealt with Etsy? Seems decent.

The bandwidth of a single 802.11n channel is far greater than the useful bandwidth of any cable / DSL internet connection.

If I have more than 3 wireless devices running at any given time and try to use a 4th, that 4th device does not connect to the internet unless I either disconnect one of the first 3 (and/or sometimes reboot the modem).

Do I need more modems? More routers? More internets? :noob:

All of it?

mgeoffriau 12-03-2013 06:38 PM

I have a bajillion devices connected to this and I haven't power cycled it in over 6 months. Oh, and I get a solid wifi signal out past my neighbor's mailbox. It's probably frying our brains.

Well, my intuitive response would be that you need to figure out what's wrong. While every WiFi host has a practical limitation to the number of devices which can be connected at any given time, that number should be nearer to 255 than to 3.

Seriously, something is broken or misconfigured, and I'm afraid I can't say what. I would bet that if you were to go to BestBuy and spend $45 on a modern router, that all of your wifi-related problems will magically disappear.

Sometimes, weird, flaky shit happens. After I replaced my povertyphone with a brand new Galaxy S4, my ~6 year old router would crash about 60 seconds after I connected the phone to it. New router = no more problems.

Do I need more routers? Is that a thing? An upgraded router?

What brand model of router do you have now? Some of the brands used to have a setting to set # of wireless users. Do you know/remember the setup password to check? Each brand/model typically has a default admin/admin or such.

Good routers are cheap now.

Jesus, this is starting to sound like every conversation I seem to get roped into at every family event ever.

True story:

I bring my toolbox with me whenever I fly down to Florida to visit my mother and sister around the holidays. It's a foregone conclusion that they will have saved up a laundry-list of problems which can be easily solved, presupposing that I have my Fluke meter, TDR, wire-strippers, soldering iron, Scotch 88, wire nuts, fox-and-hound, butt set, etc., close at hand.

Last Christmas, I had to repair a fucking washing machine that had an intermittent hall-sensor on the motor. That one was loads of fun to diagnose. (Considering adding the USB oscilloscope to the list of tools to pack in my holiday bag.)

My co-worker offered me 50 bucks to setup her Roku player so she could "get the hulu".

WHYYYY??? Why must this dynamic range be so bad!? I just want to watch a movie in peace. Can't hear any dialogue, action sequences blow out my speakers. FUCK YOU! Even with center at +10, it's unwatchable/listenable.

I felt this way driving to work today because somehow my subwoofer got disconnected.

A few innuendo quotation marks and a single word change gives that paragraph a whole new tone.

:( We all have our strengths and weaknesses. If you want to talk global macroeconomics or monetary systems or financial planning - I'm your guy. How to live like an international man of mystery? I'm your guy.

How to deal with the witchcraft that is modern electronics?

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1386169683

I'll investigate the details of my router; I'm guessing that will be the simple solution.

I know some of the words in that sentence  No butthurt intended, I was having flashbacks from Thanksgiving. I'm not shitting on anyone for not knowing how to configure or troubleshoot a router. I know that shit sucks and its not a practical skill that everyone can have.

I can tell you how to properly drop a tree with the felling sights on a Husqvarna chainsaw, how to field strip an M1 Garand, how to configure a Squid proxy (although its been YEARS.) I can write raw FANUC G code for CNC machines, setup vlans on a Cisco Catalyst switch... but I know my limits. Fuck all if I know when jeans are appropriate attire for a social function, how to make a souffle, how to properly invest money, how to pack a suit for travel without wrinkling the fuck out of it, etc.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses (except for maybe Joe, dude seems to know everything) and that's kinda what makes a society/economy work. It all depends on the value you (or others) put on your skills.

Nah, I'm just highly proficient at using search engines to find information. Probably comes from a youth spent hanging around the library back in the days when "searching" involved card-catalogs and reference desks. You learned how to optimize your search techniques when the time elapsed between command and output was measured in days rather than milliseconds.

I never even knew that such a thing as a felling sight existed, I loathe having to plug the light-blue cable into the back of a Catalyst, I'm convinced that calculating netmasks must somehow involve a familiarity with the occult, and the most complex gun I've ever been tasked with caring for was a pump-action .22 rifle.

Pen2_the_penguin 12-04-2013 05:34 PM

Hey gays I have a question about home surveillance... How much should I be spending for a decent kit, or do I build my own PC/DVR thingy?

Pen2_the_penguin 12-04-2013 05:37 PM

I am looking at a Samsung 6 channel 1TB dvr weatherproof nightvision tactical bacon penis kit for 360 wholesale (business license) or do I just buy a DVR card and use my left over PC parts to shimmy one up with add-on cameras of my choosing?

Because explosions are louder than casual chit-chat, that's why.

Try turning on your dynamic range compression (aka "night mode"). I just did this because my 15 month old kept squirming when I was watching action movies. 15 inch sub goes to twenny hertz.
