all the paypal alternatives are the same price. there is your free market.

mgeoffriau 08-30-2013 01:15 PM

Eh, it's still better than driving to the post office and waiting in line to get a money order (and then having to physically mail the stupid thing!).

bahurd 08-30-2013 04:36 PM

I don't think 2.9% + $0.30 is out of line. It also enables (because of the ease) a lot of parts sales between members that otherwise wouldn't happen.

I do think the process is a little tipped to the buyer though so it pays to take a lot of pictures of the parts+packing and ship only to a confirmed address.

I prefer eBay and PayPal to meeting some lunatic off Craigslist.

^+1

I bought a set of wheels for my daughters Mazda 3 and was shocked the guy gave me his address via email without even talking to me first.

No thanks... well lit parking lots for me.

It is an old girl. To start it, you start a pony motor with a hand crank, then you engage the running pony motor to a flywheel that starts the big motor.

I would love to restore it, but it would probably cost well over 100K.

the idea of taking a percent out of the transaction is kinda out of line. there's no reason I should pay paypal $30 if I send $1000 to someone but only $3 if I send $100. it's all the same to them, so each transaction should cost a fixed amount.

pp fees have to be worked into transactions because of it.

bahurd 08-30-2013 06:41 PM

But I guess you have no issues with Mastercard, Visa, Amex or any of the card companies taking their fee. You just don't see it because it's hidden. But I assure you the buyer pays it not the merchant.

And if you send the money to a person and not buying something there isn't a fee.

But, to each his own.

Paypal is in it to make money just like the rest of the world. We'd all love a no fee transaction but look at it as you're paying for the service. You're paying for being able to get your money back if the seller stiffs you.

I was just saying paypal should be free if I use ebay. Ebay owns paypal.

Well I agree with that. Highly annoying when someone says "$xxx + paypal fees" yet is willing to negotiate on price likely 10-25%. FCS just put the 2.9% in the amount and negotiate all you want or not.

I expect our free market system is setup the way it is because the merchant and the banks (CC companies) don't want you the buyer to be negotiating at each transaction or saying "will you take xx less if I pay cash". Everyone thinks the fee is a freebie and so don't question (unless your me and I always ask...).

Common in southern Germany to pay a premium if using a card and some places still wont take certain cards because of the fees.

BTW, $10 is $0.59 (0.29 + 0.30 transaction)

Braineack 08-31-2013 09:26 AM

it was supposed to be $100. it's early. dont hate.

olderguy 08-31-2013 09:57 AM

If you trust the seller, send the cash as a gift.

NA6C-Guy 08-31-2013 02:19 PM

Goddamn it ebay! I like that they can just take their fees from your bank account without any warning. I was going to make a payment in a week or two, but no, they had to have it now, when I really can't afford to have money withdrawn. Most places wait for a payment, ebay is a like a pimp who will fuck you up if you don't have your money, and take it from you. Also, thanks Paypal for helping as the right hand man.

You actually gave them access to your bank account? Tssk, tssk. You gave them permission so you are to blame. They don't have access to a valid account of mine, and when I do pay I use a real credit card and not a debit card so I am better protected from loss. I thought everyone knew that.

SO how do you get your money from Paypal when you sell something? As far as I knew, I had to.

I had them mail me a physical paper check when I sold the turbo kit off my old car. It takes a little longer but it works.
