I hate reving to red.

Am I the only one here that thinks its going to break the car? Hearing the engine scream to redline has me really really worried sometimes. I do it because I need to tune my fuel, but every time I do it I slightly cringe.

Stupid thing to worry about probably, but I cant help it, sounds un normal for an engine to rev that high. I guess its because I grew up with V8's.

blaque 03-03-2008 09:37 PM

Wtf? This isn't Mnet :giggle:

disturbedfan121 03-03-2008 09:38 PM

lol suck it up sam lol

Saml01 03-03-2008 09:42 PM

No love? Huh, NO LOVE.... :(

Braineack 03-03-2008 09:47 PM

what's worse is having a license plate that reads "REV2RED" and then i produce dyno plots like this:

btw, when i first read your title i thought you were talking about me :gay:

slutz4 03-03-2008 09:52 PM

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ?!?!

y8s 03-03-2008 10:11 PM

sam, you need to sell your stick and get an automatic. you dont deserve a stick.

cardriverx 03-03-2008 10:13 PM

i bounced off the rev limit alot when I was non turboed, now I have much less of a need.

Loki047 03-03-2008 10:16 PM

god damn it sam....

miataspeed1point6 03-03-2008 10:19 PM

I think thats when the engine sounds best. When I had my open downpipe it made people think the world was coming to an end.

Saml01 03-03-2008 10:27 PM

Sheesh im sorry, but I told you guys. I grew up with V8's, red line was 5500 rpm. I have had my car for 2 years now, and its always bugged me just a bit.

Haha +1 on that. I scared quite a few people on the road when I was dumping out behind the dp.

i did that in the civic all day,
every day, about 60 times a day
on the way to work,
on the way to the mall,
on the way home from work
on the way to the track,
on the way to get my oil changed,
on the way to the store to pick up pop corn
on the way to my friends house,
and any other time i drove the car

the miata... also,, everywhere i went, redline for the first 3 gears

but now that im boosted, like cardriverx said, i dont have much of a need

*edit* i know the gauge was cold, it wasn't hooked up,
i had a triple gauge pod that had water oil temps and pressure for oil
and the check engine was because the car couldn't figure out where the old motor went,
and what this new monstrosity was

Attachment 214267

LOOINEY 03-04-2008 12:22 AM

I never used to take my engines to red line untill I got the rx7. Now its a daily work out and find myself doing it in my miata.

P.s. You should paint the red-line pink so it dont scare you. lol sorry i had to join the burning.

HAHA even when it's cold^^

urgaynknowit 03-04-2008 12:24 AM

i actually got my stock needle stuck just past 8k on the civic,
there was a little barb thing that was just at the 8.4 mark, and i got it stuck
i had to take it all apart, and the the barb out, the motor went to about 9k lol

scfreshy 03-04-2008 12:35 AM

What engine did you have in the civic? A B series?
I have a friend with an H22 in an EF. Its pretty beasty, but its got some nasty traction problems.

urgaynknowit 03-04-2008 12:42 AM

yea, type r motor

i have a buddy with a h22 turbo civic, it makes mid 10 second passes... to say the least, it moves

I'm sure you could fit a v8 into your miata. but then you'd bitch about taking it over 4 grand.

scfreshy 03-04-2008 12:49 AM

Shit, where did you find a Type R in Mass?
The H22 is a sexy engine. My friend got his from hmotors. Don't know if you've ever heard of them...pretty good prices though.
What got you out of hondas and into miatas?

urgaynknowit 03-04-2008 12:51 AM

knew a import shop in jap land, they shipped it to this kid in Virginia,
who then changed his mind on it.
i was looking for a motor on hmotors(yes ive heard of them)
then i stumble upon this motor, and i jumped on it
23 hours later, i had it in my room.
2 weeks after that, i had it at 9k

sry for thread jacking

cjernigan 03-04-2008 01:00 AM

I don't like redline in my car as much as my buddies NA. I attribute that to my small turbo that doesn't pull quite as good up top. The turbo scream is much much more intense than the scream of your engine at redline, be prepared, break in the vagina.

MX_Eva 03-04-2008 02:01 AM

I personally am waiting for the day I do head work and take the miata to 9k. I think i'll need a bigger turbo...lol.

teknikscian 03-04-2008 03:08 AM

i used to get worried when i owned a celica GTS, damn engine felt like it would blow up is a flea coughed on it... i hated that car...

magnamx-5 03-04-2008 04:00 AM

Put a post it on your tach and just drive until it slows down then shift. FWIW my TA is the only vehicle i have that has a rev limitt of less than 6.5 hell i spin my bike to 13K all the time it is great fun.

Sam: Don't be a pussy. Running a miata to redline is what it was built for!!

These are all N/A:

He ran out of gas in that one.

I have HOURS worth of that car doing donuts on film...
This car has 210,000 miles, 60,000 have been suprcharged. I lost count 4 years ago how many 7000rpm clutch dumps we've done in that car. Seriously its seen at LEAST 1000 miles of life doing donuts!! No Bullshit! They're tough tough tough little engines!

mike_671 03-04-2008 06:43 AM

thats awsome now i want to go out there and redline my car for another 100,000 miles

mazda/nissan 03-04-2008 07:20 AM

i feel your pain sam, i hardly ever take my car up to redline because it stops making power before then and because the transmission sounds like its gonna go all grenade next to my thigh. It does feel a lot more comfortable taking the 240 to redline even though it stops making power WWAAAYYYY before then, probably because it sounds better doing it?

elesjuan 03-04-2008 07:59 AM

Seriously.. My crotch rocket (1993 w/40,000 miles on it) can handle bouncing off the limiter @ 14,100rpm for 20 minutes straight, then about 10 hours of riding in 2nd gear from 4-14,000rpm.... I think our B series engines can handle it just fine. Think about it, larger displacement engines have low end grunt and don't need to spin to oblivion... 4 cylinders need to make up for that lack of low end power by spinning higher to make upper rpm power. Ever notice the smaller the engine, usually the higher the redline?

Ferrari F355, 3.5 liter V8, 375bhp @ 8250rpm, redline... 8500rpm.. Small motor, makes plenty of torque, but has to spin higher to get the upper power.

Arkmage 03-04-2008 08:45 AM

I upped the rev limit in MS and use the limiter pretty regular... it's no big deal.

hustler 03-04-2008 09:19 AM

I remember back when I bought my miata and it turned 4k rpm at highway speeds. Every 10 miles or so I would let it coast because it just made me nervous.

Then I did one track day, then another, and another...so basically I did roughly 35 hours of track time last season on a 150k mile motor. You're fine dude.

Saml01 03-04-2008 10:10 AM

Now I just have one worry. Someone on M.net is gonna find this thread and link back to it the way we do with their stupid posters.

Braineack 03-04-2008 10:23 AM

:jerkit::bang: Thats because m.neters are tarded. ;)

(I hope they read this.. Losers.)

All I know is if I had a 1.6 car I'd abuse it even more than I do the 1.8, cause I know of at least 10 motors around that I could pickup for next to nothing...

exactly, one of the great things about the miata is cheap parts, blow a motor, nothin major for a 1.6 $500 max and you're bouncing of the rev limit all over again.

really my ka must be old and tired then, that motor in stock form seems to die at like 5000rpm. sure has nice daily driving at cruising grunt though, almost feels like 6 cylinder till you get to 4k

Exhondaman 03-04-2008 08:34 PM

Sam...I'm with ya on this.

It's not that the engine can't take the abuse, to me, it just seems un-natural in the upper rev ranges. It vibrates like a Hello Kitty dildo and the sounds isn't very comforting.

My hundah b16 engine with Jun cams made power to 9k and it was pure music when vtec kicked in at 7100rpms. With the miata motors, it the equivalent to a drunk choir trying to sing in accapella. Not very harmonious.

Sadly I have to disagree with you here.. I've yet to ever in my life hear a honda engine that wasn't in an NSX, Formula 1 car, or my lawnmower that didn't (to me) sound like complete and total fucking garbage at ANY rpm. Maybe the grunt from the intake is an okay sound, but there seems no possible way to get rid of that humming buzzing drone that comes from the exhaust that makes me want to end myself. :crx: Thats just my opinion, though. :)

mazda/nissan 03-04-2008 10:23 PM

what about the s2000 elesjuan???

Hey, thats your opinion indeed.

Keep in mind also that most of the B-series vtec motors were MADE to rev with almost ideal rod/stroke ratios. The miatas motors (designed for turbo applications) doesn't even have a number remotely close to ideal, and quite frankly, it screams and vibrates in pain at substained high revs.

urgaynknowit 03-04-2008 10:34 PM

mine had a quiet exhaust, and it sounded good,
check it out

i had a ball with that thing

the camera car is a b16 civic, i/h/e clutch flywheel and other crap
ran a 15 flat or so at the track

Bryce 03-04-2008 10:34 PM

Lack of balance shafts could have something to do with the buzziness of the miata motor no?

lol. Very true. What is their ratio, right about 1:1?

Wow. I eat my words, that actually didn't sound like a donky being assraped!! Guess thats cause you have a real exhaust??

Actually now that I think about it, a local high power turbo guys honda doesn't sound too terrible..

I've heard 1.6s buzz really badly, but I've never noticed a 1.8 buzz??

Efini~FC3S 03-05-2008 03:41 PM

It's good to redline it every once in a while. Breaks up the carbon build up. I think I hit the rev-limiter more now that I'm turbo, it revs so fast it catches me of guard.

Don't be a wuss, rev that sh*t out.

UrbanSoot 03-05-2008 03:45 PM

i hit rev limiter for like 20 seconds to half a minute sometimes... in both my miata and 350z except that rev limiter on 2nd gear on 350z is pretty scary thing...

miataspeed1point6 03-05-2008 04:12 PM

I love the way the engine sounds as it revs higher with the turbo spinning faster. I can still enjoy a drive with no music, just the engine making noise. The week I put in my turbo all i did was listen for the spool....and anything breaking.

y8s 03-05-2008 05:05 PM

it's a rare day I drive my car and dont hit the limiter in 1st.

Learn to fucking shift. Bouncing off the limiter for 20s is retarded.

jwarriner 03-05-2008 05:33 PM

I missed a shift in my Talon once. Logger showed 10,5xx RPMs. Didn't do any damage (that I ever knew about). We used to raise our rev limit to 8500 without any internal engine mods.

Anyone ever break a Miata simply from revving too high? What broke first?

EDIT: When I say "missed a shift" I mean I downshifted where I wanted to upshift.

levnubhin 03-05-2008 08:47 PM

I think that na Miatas sound scary when you rev 2 red. But turbo Miatas sound so much better. Im pretty sure I do it every day.
