Acetylene in a balloon scares the **** out of me. Me and my dad did one once and threw it in a fire, not expecting a very big boom... wrong! Then a few years ago I heard a story about a guy and his wife (obviously very big rednecks) carrying 2 big balloons of acetylene in the cab of their truck and something set off one of them in her face and then set the other one off and blew out all of the windows and burned her really badly... Even since then I have been a bit scared of them, static spark and your hands are gone.

The whole static ignition danger scares me as well. I think if I made some I would build something that remotely filled the balloon and triggered the explosion. It would not be too difficult really, and worth the effort.
The oxy-acetylene balloons floating up tied to helium balloons is REALLY cool though. Air burst. There are some excellent videos of home-made acetylene bombs of all sorts on youtube. People firing 50 gal steel drums WAY up in the air and the like. It's beautiful *sniff*

The one we made wasn't huge, but we filled it and carried it by hand and dropped it a few feet from a fire we had burning and let the wind carry it to the fire. Any little static could have set it off in my dads hands. It was a cheap 12'' balloon, filled to near popping capacity. This was before the days of internet videos, so we had no idea what it would do.
I'd like to see one of those big *** latex (looks like latex anyway) weather balloons filled with acetylene go off.

Acetyeline is great scare tool in the shop. Saw an old timer pull this one.
Have one concentrated welder, grinder, distracted person working.
Simple Styrofoam coffee cup. on edge of table. Upside down
Take oxy acetel torch and fill the cup While Upside down, with acetylene...
Light torch fully. then torch the foam cup
BLAMO/ the stored gas will explode. Scare the **** out of anyone not paying attention.
Works great inside a metal shop.
