I use a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop, and it has kicked some ***.
I'm now at the point (1 year old, just went over warranty...good timing) where if I move my laptop while it is running, I get a bsod (cd rom is dying, i know)

Their CustService sucks, but I build computers for a hobby so I haven't needed to speak with any Muhammed's, Kali's, Jafar's or Mufasa's.

(lol @ the name choices I used, and my usage of apostrophes!)

My old *** inspirion is rock solid, and gets constant torture. But it is just a P3 with a massive 4 gig HD.

I cant really complain about the build quality of my Dell. Yeah the hinge desing is stupid but I do use it everyday for several hours, I tote it around alot and I have dropped it a couple of times. The case itself is very strong. I wouldn't mind the 2 issues I've had if I could get better customer service from them. I like the product I just dont like the company that stands behind it and thats why I wont ever buy another.

yeah try wha ti did. just bend a piece of metal into a U shape and jam it in there, you might need to cut out some of the plastic cover. Its ghetto but acts as a decent splint. I actually have holes in it so the screen screws into it and jb weld over that. it makes the computer useable, but as soon as i finish my turbo project ill be saving up for a new-non-dell-laptop.

Btw.

Wanna talk about the most over engineered laptop I have ever come across?

Apple Powerbook, the 17 incher. The metal one, with the 1.5ghz ppc processor.

I had to take one apart to replace the lcd panel. Easily at least 100 of the tiniest ******* screws known to man to open the thing, and then the clips holding the panel together cost me at least a pint of blood. But wanna talk about sturdy, its Apple.

But I got it done. Never again.

Personally..I had a Dell C840...thing weighed like 7-8 lbs...but was a trooper. Sold it for $400 with some extras...went and bought a Toshiba 17" widescreen on sale for $400 (after tax) and have had it since. I have had my share of everything...HP's are ****...Toshiba's are awesome...as are Thinkpads (IBM is exspensive though).

Good luck with your next machine.
