i quit smoking

cold turkey

Zabac 04-08-2008 04:46 PM

you pussy

jayc72 04-08-2008 04:50 PM

How long?

I quit 1.5 years ago, cold turkey nothing aiding me. It was easy (after smoking pack/day for 17 years). The thing that really made it work for me was knowing that if I even entertained the idea of trying to smoke again I'd be fucked and hooked again. 1.5 years later and I rarely think about it. That was my 6th "serious" try. Just get it into your head that you will not EVER smoke again, and any temptation will put you back to square 1. It really is stunning how quickly the physical addiction to cigarettes goes away.

Good for you, keep up the good work.

y8s 04-08-2008 04:52 PM

jayc72 04-08-2008 04:53 PM

I quit about 2-3 months ago and have had nothing but health problems since. I'm about to start again to see if I feel better. 2 months with a headache sucks. My doctors have no idea what is causing it.

krayzrac3r 04-08-2008 05:00 PM

I'd rather have a headache than cancer. Actual withdrawl will not last 2-3 months. If you have headaches still, it's (no pun intended) all in your head if you think smoking will fix it. I'd stay off the cigarettes and find a new Dr.

Whew, glad you were kidding. My dad had health problems for 1 year after quiting. He had smoked for like 30 years, then finally quit one day. He got sick with bronchitis and was so sick the doctor said he had a 50% chance of making it, and suggested he not smoke another cigarette if he wanted to better those chances any. He stoped smoking, recovered after 2 weeks, and hasn't smoked since.

Doppelgänger 04-08-2008 05:18 PM

Meh, i smoke like 3-4 clove cigs a day.... I did smoke reg. cigs. a couple years ago and i did get to the point where it was a pack a day :( Now a pack lasts ~1week.

Here's a surprise for you; I've been smoking for over 41 years (started at 13:mad:). I've quit a couple of times. I quit once for over 6 months; went to visit family in Madrid and everyone was smoking so I took a cigarette and here I am.

My wife quit about 2 months ago. I keep postponing it :bang:

UrbanSoot 04-08-2008 05:39 PM

i started smoking when i was around 12-13. then i quit when i was 15. didnt smoke for long time and started again when i was 20. now im 22 and i dont plan on starting again.

i feel horrible right now by the way... 3 hours of no smoking. 1 pack a day is what i usually smoke. sometimes more.

You are 54?!?! :)

My dad quit when he was about 60, had smoked on and off (mostly on) since he was about 14. He's been good for about 6 years now.

Quit, just imagine how much extra $$$ you'll have for Miata parts. When I quit I took the money I'd normally spend in a month and put it aside. $250 / month adds up.

Bottom line for me is I didn't want my kids to remember me smoking. I quit about 1 month be fore my son's 2nd birthday.

I'd honestly rather be kicked in the balls 3-4 times a day rather than smoke a clove cigarette. All the shitty taste as a regular cigarette but with out all the yummy nicotine! sounds like my dad. started as a young teenager and quit when he was in his 60s because we made him smoke outside and he got tired of being ostracized. it took a few tries (his mother died, etc) but he is off them now.

Ok I sound like a cheerleader, and I appologize for that.

Don't put the smoking out of your head. Trying to ignore it is foolish. Pay attention to what your mind and body are telling you, but try and understand what is going on.

You feel like shit. That's your body wanting the nicotine. It is no coincidence that most people will smoke a cigarette about once an hour. So immediately after finishing your cigarette you feel "great", but really what you are feeling is the lack of want for the nicotine. Once you stop the nicotine rapidly leaves your system and the craving comes back. It's a fucking trap. If you cease smoking you'll no longer have the desire. The desire for the nicotine is not natural to your body, if you aren't consuming it you won't want it.

The nasty trick here is that you have fooled yourself into thinking smoking is pleasurable. Seriously its not. What you are doing is creating an uncomfortable condition in your body in order to relieve it. How fucking stupid is that?! Basically it's like walking around all day with your balls in a vice only to get relief by removing them for 5 minutes once an hour. Insanity, and you are paying for the pleasure.

The bitch is getting to feel right again with out it. for me the first couple of hours were the suck. But once I reached about day four I knew I was beating it. And what kept me going is the knowledge that I would never smoke another cigarette in my life.

Be strong, you won't always crave it. And it is possible to beat it.

Read this guys book: http://www.theeasywaytostopsmoking.com/

UrbanSoot 04-08-2008 06:54 PM

i got some nicotine gum just right now. gonna chew it only when i cant stand the craving any longer and im gonna try to push myself to stop chewing that nasty shit by end of this week. but i do feel a lot better now after that gum :)

You are only prolonging the pain.

Good luck either way.

xturner 04-08-2008 07:02 PM

Good for you. It's not an easy ride. I was kind of lucky(?) in that I quit while I had an ass-kicking case of bronchitis(my doctor - "Still smoking? Good work. Now you'll have this an extra week or two."). I felt so crappy from being sick I didn't really miss smoking for the first couple weeks. But it was probably 2 years before I stopped having the occasional craving. I gave in once after almost 2 years and it felt pretty crappy, so I figured I was over it. Going to bars was the toughest, but now that you can't smoke in bars it might not be so bad.

53 here I quit 13 years ago from an over 2 pack a day habit. Started when I was 16 and quit for 5 years in my 30s and started again. Into some serious road cycling now and smoking doesnt match that either. I chewed nicorette well past what they recommended

At least I can still drive a Miata!

Urban, keep it up. I already had my son buy me a pack of Nicorette gum. I'll take out of the closet tonight. Had it hidden so I couldn't see it.

And Jay, fwiw I thank you for your encouragement :)

Rafa 04-08-2008 07:22 PM

One thing that scares the hell out of me when it comes to quitting smoking is the fact that the time I quit for 6 months I gained 40 pounds (I went up to 220 and I'm at 190 now).

Jay, thanks for that link.

Urban, I wish I had the willpower to follow you right now.

cjernigan 04-08-2008 07:25 PM

My rifle coach says he's quitting all the time. Turns out he just chews the gum to appease the wife and smokes when he gets stressed out. I don't think I could ever start smoking, takes up too much time and money, i'm a cheap ass too so that helps.

miataspeed1point6 04-08-2008 07:30 PM

On the local forum there was a thread just like this. The guy said he used Chantix and it made him stop really fast. Might want to look into it?

UrbanSoot 04-08-2008 07:31 PM

last thing im worried about is gaining weight. im 5' 11" and 115lbs. its only good if i gain 40lbs!

UrbanSoot 04-08-2008 07:31 PM

need a prescription for chantix... no medical coverage :/

patsmx5 04-08-2008 07:33 PM

Try peppermints instead of that nicotine gum. Some people it works better. Something about the mint that does the trick for some people.

Vashthestampede 04-08-2008 07:39 PM

Fucking right on man! Stay with it, you'll feel stronger after a week or two not smoking. But you cant cheat, that doesn't count. :)

My wrist doctor recommended I quit before he fused my wrist back together. He gave me wellbutrin and I haven't smoked in a little over 2 months now. I have been smoking .5 pack to 1.5 a day since I was 16. Now turning 24 next month....I felt it was time to grow up. I go throughout my day now and I don't even think about smoking. I can smell new smells, I don't smell, I can breather smoother, I'm pumped.

Pot on the other hand, that's a different story. I usually toke a couple times a week. :yippee:

That's funny. I never figured you for the easy-fix type.

socal pat 04-08-2008 08:18 PM

I quit about 3 years ago. Got scared straight. Had some kind of episode and figured cigs may be the cause. There is no magic potion for quitting. I had a good reason and that was enough to giterdone. I used the patch and it did help with the craving. When I got really antsy I took a toke to help me calm down. It is a fucking tough 8 weeks to get through, but it's only 8 weeks out of your life. After that it becomes a memory. I still think about cigs fondly from time to time, but it's no different than "craving" a steak or a burger now.

I had been trying to gain weight my whole life. I was 6'1 and 165 since highschool. After 30 years of smoking I gained 18lbs. in 2 months without changing my diet. Hang in there you CAN do it. They don't own you.

UrbanSoot 04-08-2008 08:30 PM

5 and a half hours now :)

jayc72 04-08-2008 08:38 PM

Don't use the gum, you are just substituting and it'll only give you the illusion that you are winning. The nicotine is still in your system and you're still feeding your addiction. Is a heroine junkie any less of one when they shoot instead of smoke it?

This is all a mental game, you just need to get in the right mind set for it and it'll work. The only thing you have to do is be committed to doing it. The physical addiction is merely the hook that keeps it going.

Seriously, throw away the gum or I assure you you'll be smoking in a couple of days.

Yea he said it was also used as a mood stabilizer or some shit, but he said if anything it'll just keep me level headed. All I know is its the first prescription I have ever taken in my life, and I finally quit smoking. I concentrate alot better, and have zero cravings for a cig. I tried cheating the first week, and just holding a cigarette didn't feel right.

socal pat 04-08-2008 10:38 PM

I took Wellbutrin, Zyban, Bupropion (all the same). It made me feel like shit. Slow moving, dry mouth, heavy limbs. That's when I went for the patch.

scfreshy 04-08-2008 10:41 PM

I smoked a few cigs a couple years back, I was 16 or so. They don't do anything for me. I don't really see how people can enjoy smoking to the point of doing it on a daily/hourly basis. When you think about...what are you getting out of that cigarette? You pay a shitload of money for it, you put it in your mouth, light it on fire, and breathe in smoke. Who came up with that?

wildfire0310 04-08-2008 10:56 PM

stick with it man, I quit awhile back to where I don't have an craving anymore and only smoke when I get stressed to the point of getting sick but the lack of craving is nice.

I found that after the first two weeks had passed most of the cravings where gone it was the habit of smoking that was hard. Such as going to the bar and having a drink I would smoke cause it was a habit.

Keep up the good work man, and do anything you can to stop thinking about it.

jayc72 04-09-2008 01:10 PM

I think the 1st 24hours is the most difficult in a way. In 17 years I don't think I went more than 8-10 hours with out a smoke, and that's only because I had to sleep or be on a plane. 24 hours with nothing was a major milestone.

Keep it up, and don't substitute anything. Just be secure in the knowledge that you are winning and there is no turning back.

Doppelgänger 04-09-2008 01:27 PM

smoke filterless cigs... you'll hate it and want to quit for sure lol.

Dude, realistically its way too soon to say "no more cravings"

Make it a week at the very least, being around smokers, doing shit you would normally smoke during. Like for me I usually smoked a good amount when I was out drinking.

1 or 2 days is a good start no doubt, but wayy too soon to know what withdrawal is. Keep it going and goodluck :bigtu:
