Just curious... Do you get a stolen engine from a chop shop or what? Because I know they are not stealing engines in parking lots, or at least I hope not.

When police popped open the hood, Hoang said, they found a stolen transmission
He had purchased a B-20 Vtech engine with a double-overhead cam a couple months before, and after a police investigation, was told it was stolen.
On a side note maybe the B-20 is not an engine... maybe its a cordless phone. That spelling is right out of the article.

My favorite quote from the article is just below that one...

Zavala, who admits he has been involved in street racing, estimates he and his mother spent about $10,000 on improvements to his car.

They no longer get to live their life a 1/4 mile at a time. Looks like bus stop to bus stop. Serves 'em right.

Well it sounds pretty retarded, not to say these guys obviously aren't illegaly racing, however it sounds like these guys all got a pretty raw deal. I mean if I pay a shop to swap in a V-tech engine I'm going to assume they didn't get it from "I know a guy". The kid with the transmission issue sounds like a raw deal as well. The only one that sounds bad is the kid with the VIN gone...but if your interior is trashed and messed up the moment you replace it...boom according to the police that means it's obviously a stolen vehicle. I've had friends who've had to show the police the vin stamped into the fire wall and the police still thought something was up. course in that case it was a 240 with a RB swapped in, and the dash didn't match and it wasn't his car. It was a customers car that he was testing because he had just finished the car...then the cops accused him of running a chop shop..it was pretty ghey.

I know when I buy a stolen engine and put it in a car I plead ignorance? "But officier I didn't know" doesn't cut it.

Glad I don't live in **** California. Good thing they'll slow down the 13 deaths in 4 months.

I wonder how many drunk drivers get their cars crunch after an offense?

They say there's a market for stolen parts from Hondas and Acuras because of street racing? Those makes have led the Most Stolen Cars lists for 10 years now. And probably %95 for body/interior parts totally unrelated to performance.

I don't condone the street racing but the cops in Cali and everywhere really have much more important things to be spending our tax dollars on.

"When police popped open the hood, Hoang said, they found a stolen transmission. Hoang flashed a receipt for the transmission he bought from his father who runs an auto shop and doubted the item was hot."

"Hey dad.. I need a receipt for this incase the cops ask where it came from."

All this is going to do is cause people to race cheaper and cheaper low buck claimer cars on the street. LOL. I would pimp out a festiva or something like it. Lots of boost, a clutch and pressure plate, and VP C16. Impound my $1000 street terror, I'll be back tomorrow with another... and it will be running C16 and sporting another $200 turbo with no wastegate. Boost control is for pussies anyway.

Mark

PS - Mind you, it sounds like they didn't actually get busted for racing but loitering.

They got busted while loitering/racing but the cars were crushed because they had potentially stolen parts in their cars.

I [WANT] a dodge omni, piece together Chrysler turbo parts from the 80s/90s and slicks...I've seen the cars run 9-10 second quarters.

MAYBE 1500 bucks tied up.
