Emilio and I chatted a bit yesterday about bicycles and I sent him this email, but it's a pretty good start to our thread.
Basically, my bicycles and how I became obsessed with them in 2-months: Johnwag bought a Cervelo tri-bike and told me he was selling this (Cannondale SM600 from 1986) and it became my pit-bicycle for $100: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368209706 I plan to get a carbon fork, find a rear brake for it, then powder-coat it "Guinness foam tan" with simple, black lettering. For the record, I would have gone with "Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout foam tan" but it's lighter in color, although a superior beer. Then, after riding that Cannondale I bought from John for about thirty minutes, I realized that I needed to give road biking a try and I found this 54cm Cannondale Crit bike: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368209706 Yes, it's Mariner Blue and that had a huge influence on my impulse buy. It looks tiny and with a 25mm set-back seat post it will fit better, it's just ultra tight and old-school. My GF will ride it for a while and when she graduates from it, I will refinish and make it a beer-bike with flat-bars. After riding that Mariner Blue for 250 miles, I broke my promise to wait until summer and started shopping bikes because I realized that crit-bike was awful for endurance training and I started shopping Bianchi bikes because they are pornographic. Didn't/don't have a lot of cash and could get laid off soon, so it was important to get an awesome bike to ride around on if I became unemployed, lol. I was pretty much sold on this which was $1600 and a pretty big investment for me. However, I discovered this Sette Vitale 1.0 bike that was $969 shipped and came with Shimano 105 controls/F&R derailers/cassette/crank/brakes and 1700g wheels. That was clearly better than the Bianchi or the CAAD10 I was interested in, so I bought it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368209706 ...and that's one of the best purchases I've made in my life. I keep looking at bike porn, but I'll probably never replace it. I am not vulnerable to carbonlust and I don't care about pedigree, so I see no reason to upgrade. I suppose I could be talked-into a Russ Denny SS bike, but I'd probalbly just get a $99 Sette or Nashbar frame if there were ever a problem. Then, I've always wanted to mountain bike and I was getting sent to Ruidoso in NM and wanted to be sure I took advantage of this because it's basically a free vacation since I didn't have meetings everyday including the weekends. So I bought this Cannondale SL2 29er. I basically wanted the cheapest 29er HT I could get with hydro disc and a Rockshox fork. I was all checked-out and leaving with my black SL2, then I spied this awesome Mariner Blue colored bike and said..."Excuse me, I need to exchnage this bike for that one in the awesome color". hehe https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368209706 It turns out the brake levers are terrible but I'm still happy with the purchase and got some of this action: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368209706 Easily the best impluse buy of my life. |

Nice man, altitude is killer. The base of my rides start at 7200' and i usually end up 9k+. There's some trails near the local ski area that start around 10k elevation. I rode my bike to wheeler peak last summer, and plan on doing it again. Well honestly a lot of it was hiking going up, 100% riding going down though.

If I had a full-suspension I'd probably end up locking the rear out most of the time anyway. That first pic of me (I'm the one in the black shirt) in Utah was the only sort of ride where I was glad to have a rear shock. Just depends what you ride on and where. Most of the time I'm on singletrack. Mountain biking shorts are a must. |
Agreed, on flowy singletrack I usually have my propedal on, but I like to be able to use my bike for more "all mountain" riding as well. Stuff that you typically have to hike up and ride down, etc. We have really rocky terrain around here. Nothing wrong with a hardtail though, I really wan't to add a nice one to the stable. Nothing will get you riding better and picking better lines than a hardtail.
|
My neighbor has some carbon race bike that was used to win some big race, but I don't remember what it was. I'll try to get a pic of it next time I'm over there.

I'm glad I bought a HT bike, but after the riding I did where the "intermediate"trails have mutliple 4' gaps and shit-ton of moguls, I'd have a dually. |

Here's the CAAD9 I've had for like 7 years. I've rode the piss out of it and it continues to be a great bike. I've also got a 70s Fuji 10 speed road bike that I ride every day at school. Cannondale stays at home so it doesn't get shit on by drunk college kids and weather outside.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368229608 The Fuji actually rides so solidly that sometimes I don't know which I prefer, until I ride over 20 miles and then it's quite clear. |

Lol, when that picture was taken and I first got the bike I was probably just over 5'. Now I am still not tall, around 5' 5" so it works fine.
The frame is pretty small, I think 58cm, so the seat is a good bit higher now. You should see my gargantuan Fuji as well, I've had it even longer. |

Poverty bikes REPRESENT
The picture is a bit old. But it has wrap on the Tri-bars, the brake cable is trimmed and capped and the chain is properly tensioned. Other than that pretty much the same. Got the frame for 50 bucks from a guy who bought it on amazon and got the wrong size lol. Also i don't ride fixed gear, just single speed. No scarf needed. my old frame was a windsor The hour. But it was a 61cm which was too big for me at 6'2". I only have a 30" inseam and I have a 78" reach so finding a bike for my body is tough. |

Any standard square taper crank should work for an sm600 right? Just need to make sure you get a straight chain line to the rear cog, so you have to check the width on the bottom bracket. Just depends how much money you want to spend. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...eed%20crankset |

Here's my latest creation; early 90s Cannondale R800 with a long list of amazing Craigslist and eBay deals. Just finished this up a month ago or so, still less than 100 miles on it.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368377461 DuraAce 7700 9spd brifters, cassette, rear der Ultegra 6700 crank 105 5500 brakes and front der 3t ergo aluminum bar and stem Kestrel carbon threadless fork Neuvation M28x Aero wheelset pic shows the stock Cdale post and Selle Italia Turbo saddle but those have since been replaced with a 3t Dorico carbon post and 2013 OEM Velo Cannondale take-off saddle. I also have a 2011 Giant XTC 29er with just an Easton riser bar, bashguard, grips and pedals. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368377461 Last but not least I have a 58 Schwinn Corvette that was my grandpa's, then father's, now mine, that I am restoring/restomodding/whatever. This is my DD bike. Although I can't compete with a third-generation family bike, I did buy this from the original owner, who told me he bought it at age 11 with his Confirmation money. I even have the (pristine) original string tags.
1959 Rollfast. I replaced the forks, bars, pedals, wheels, and recovered the seat, but I of course still have all the original parts. Had been in a shed for 30+ years when I got it, was a rusty basket case. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...3/IMAG1200.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368400237 |

Attachment 239653 Bought it new in spring of '04 using some REI awesome coupon and saleness for $400-450, I don't remember exactly. Since then I've gone through a couple sets of tires, some chains, couple chain rings, brake pads, and a shit ton of tubes. Installed the clipless pedals 2 years ago and other than that it's still stock. Road a bike with a non-shitty-low-end fork last year and I've resisted the urge to upgrade until now. Armed with a 20% off coupon and dividend I'm gonna order up a RockShox Recon Silver this weekend - sub $200 for an air fork sounds pretty fantastic to me. Should be quite the upgrade. I'll be the first to embarrass myself and post a video of me huffing and puffing around the trails of Indian Camp Creek Park in St Charles, MO on Sunday. The creek bottom trails (very fun) are still closed from all the rain so I started out on a different section and basically road most of it backwards, got lost a few times and had to turn around and I even included a walk of shame back up a hill I really didn't want to ride back up. I was pissed at myself for being so lazy soon as I did it. |
