While researched turbos for S2000's for my buddy, every other answer to any question was "ask your tuner".

Lol! My father in law doesn't have 2 nickels to rub together, but for some stupid reason, he has a decent credit score. He bought a 1998 BMW 528i in like '06 simply cause it said BMW and he felt it makes him look like a high roller. He ran 87 octane in it since he owned it. I told him, "you know the manual calls for premium, right?". He claims, "I can run anything I want and it'll adjust for it."
Like 2 years later he goes to get it inspected and it didn't pass cause the check engine light was on. Something like "cam position sensor actuator out of threshold" or something. He is an automotive dumbass and should not own a vehicle due to his lack of maintenance on them. He says "I have no idea why that code comes up" to which I reply, "your ECU is detecting knock due to the shitty octane and it's trying to retard the timing to compensate for it, but it's retarded at its maximum limit. Try filling it with premium for a few tanks and it should go away."

Why? Seriously, filling up on premium costs me like 2-3 extra dollars a tank for 10 gallons.

I'm not sure if timing goes back to where its supposed to be on each key cycle or something (not sure how the Subaru ECU handles knock detection/timing retard), but if its constantly retarding timing, it might be constantly detecting knock. I'm cool off knocking in any amount when an STI engine costs as much as it does.

And faeflora honestly wiring the wastegate open in an STI defeats the purpose of owning an STI. Buy a stock Impreza at that point.

This is even more dumb. 91 is not race gas, and running what the manufacturer recommends is nothing like running race gas for your commute to work.

I'm not saying buy an Impreza because you don't want to run 91. I'm saying buy an Impreza because wiring the wastegate open makes the STI an overpriced Impreza.

wiring the wastegate open and/or dropping the timing enough to run 87 octane on a turbo subaru is dumb. it gets about as slow as a prius, and still doesn't get anything decent for gas mileage because its still got a big arse motor and weighs a porky 3300lbs.

Answer: because your engine was not built and tuned to run on "race gas" (whatever that means). It was built and tuned to run on a 9:1 blend of unleaded gasoline and ethanol with a combined octane rating ((R+M)/2) of 87.

By contract, the engine in the STi was designed to run on 91 octane fuel.

Actually its even more drastic than that:

STi's and EVO's were designed for 93 octane. Its a known fact that EVO's on 91 knock in the 5k-5.5k region on the stock tune with no mods. Sti's also get feedback knock every now and then bone stock and on stock tune, but usually due to massive heat soak and/or bad batch of 91. Their ecu's are super awesome and react extremely quickly pulling timing, richening up, and "learning" said feedback and fine correction knock keeping the map retarded for next time the owner goes wot.
Hell some of them drive around on 1/2 or 3/4ths IAM multiplier because the car never feels comfortable enough to run "all of it" on the crap gas its being fed.

So you're taking a car that's already compromising on 91, and putting 87 in it.
There's also way more to it than simply plummeting ignition timing on a subaru to battle knock/det and everything else that comes with 87 octane.

I wanted to let you mouth breathers know my daily sounds like ---- on 87 but it's not detonating. I tried pulling spark and it still runs like ----. It's more bauce on 91.

We read it. We just know that, even if the OP had a faucet in his garage which dispensed 87 octane gasoline for free, putting it into an STi is still a bad idea.

Here's some "does this make sense?" to this thread.
Let's set the timeline for 3 weeks ago.
I have my miata that gets daily driven (weather permitting), 4 cylinder turbo 93 octane 29 mpg's. I also have a 2000 Silverado with a V8 and 33" tires that I use in all kinds of weather and I haul/ pull everything with it. It gets 14-16mpg's and is a single cab. My wife has a 2007 Mazda CX-7 that is AWD 2.3 liter 4 cyl intercooled turbo, and get's 20 average mpg's on 92 octane.
We decide that since our family will be getting bigger, I will need a different vehicle to haul our kid around that's not a Miata or a single cab truck. I look at trading my 2000 Silverado on a 2008 GMC Sierra Crew cab, but realize that I'll need to shell out like $18,000 and than I get a truck with a shorter bed that gets the same mpg's, and now I won't be able to haul $hit, and I'll have a car payment for something that still gets mid teen's mileage.
We decide on a 2009 Mazda 3 Hatch that's fully loaded and has 31,000 miles on it and get 30mpg's on 87 octane for $14,000.
Moral of the story in my eyes?
"If you want something, but don't want to run high octane, buy something else."
Used car loans are the insanely lowest interest rates right now EVER. We got the 3 for like 4%!
