I sit corrected. Why doesn't OP just get a daily that can take 87 oct? If you can afford an STi you can afford to spend $500 on a volvo 240 to drive around.

Joe, you should ban yourself for that.

How much boost are you running? No, I don't know or even care to ask what turbo you have. I just care about how many PSI's are going into your intake manifold.

thirdgen 04-22-2012 09:44 PM

^that. VW buttface at work was dissing my car and saying how he'd smoke it cause his stock Jetta runs 22psi. He used the phrase "how much boost are you running?" To which I replied, "this is how I know you don't know $hit about turbos, cause if you did, you'd understand that boost is not what matters." He's like "you don't know what you're talking about...boost is what makes power." I said, "oh yeah? Then explain how I beat a Jetta that was running 18 psi with my car running 7psi. And I didn't just beat him, I destroyed him like it was a joke."

Enough to blow the welds on the manifold if he's not careful.

That guy is an idiot. But there is something to be said about a small turbo like what we vw's have. I really enjoy 14PSI and 170ft-lbs of torque at 1800 RPM.

OMfG AN STi COMMUTER CAR?!?!?!?!??!?!?! THIS GUY SHOULD BE ARRESTED!!!!!!!!

skidude 04-23-2012 09:26 AM

I noticed the same thing over on the legacygt forum. The answer to most questions was "ask the dealer" or "that will void your warranty." There just isn't as much info available for those cars because the people who buy them just pay other people to do the work instead of learn to do it themselves. This also means their knowledge about general things like octane is lacking as well, but I just ignore all of that.

I know this awesome supra guy. Seriously, 99.99% mechanic.

I took him for a ride in my miata and he was like, "nice". He was like, why does power keep building? I was like I guess it is timing. He is like, what? You don't run static timing? -__-

With that said, the wealth of information on mt.net regarding engine management is unbelievable.

Sounds like any given NC Miata subforum.

call your tuner, bro.

hornetball 04-23-2012 11:51 AM

This seems pretty common for any community where most of the cars were bought new and/or are still under warranty. I participate in a G8 board and the level of automotive knowledge there is pretty darn low (I get flamed a lot for heresy on that board).

Eventually, decent cars move out of the hands of the pseudo-enthusiast new car buyer into the hands of hard-core car-crazies. That's when you get the beauty (and horror) of something like mt.net.

Too bad the wealth of knowledge about ticking turbos is not.

14psi at 1800rpm is stupid. High cylinder pressure at low RPMs is incredibly hard on an engine. I guess since nobody expects a vw to run very long it's NBD.

As long as you do the maintenance the MKIV's last a very long time. I can't even count how many people I know over 200k on a stock block running twice the stock boost.
