Insight K20 swap
#43
You have gone berserk in every thread k20 was mentioned. Perhaps you got your *** handed to you by one too many k series powered cars or something, cause its some extremely personal thing for you. Hate it all you want, but you're not fooling anyone with those **** poor accusations: the engine puts down good power and is great for what it is.
Its very stout, head flows a shitton untouched, and most boosted ones make upper 400's lower 500's with stock longblock, that's all there is to it.
You are one of like 5 people that hate K series vs hundreds of thousands that consider it impressive and a big improvement over the B. Guess honda is stupid for switching every other car they make to a variation of the K, and I guess the humongous aftermarket backing that evolved quicker than most other engine platforms all got it wrong.

Instead I have to deal with the fact that my friends Honda Civic Si makes in stock form what my car does with 5psi of boost.

This is exactly what I feel. I wish so badly that MY miata came with a motor similar to the K20. I wouldn't need a custom ECU, an aftermarket wideband controller, or even a turbo setup for that matter. Everything I could ever want in my cars performance could be handled with bolt ons, and a ECU reflash.

Ya know...I was actually going to start a thread about a K20 Miata swap inquiry. Think a K-Series would mate to a Miata 5 speed trans with a custom bellhousing adapter plate? Think the stock miata gauges would still work perfectly? The exhaust would be on the opposite side...
Did anybody ever seriously look into doing this? I know the F20c Miata swap guys would probably be the best to talk to.
If I did a swap, there must be rules.
1) The swap weight must either be equal to or less than the BP that was removed.
2) I average 29mpg with my current setup on 93 octane, so I'd like to still see that.
3) All my gauges would have to still work just as they did from stock.
4) More to come, but I can't think of them right now.
I just see a swap as a lot of money and a lot of work, when a bigger turbo and bigger injectors could achieve more power. My goal isn't really more power though. It's factory ECU, factory internalled, naturally aspirated 4 cylinder power. I just want to put out what my car does now, or more, without the turbo and the Megasquirtness.

The last time I went to the track I lined up with my buddy's 1965 Mustang Fastback, cause I raced him when my car was stock, so this was a good before and after match. It was also the first time I hit 13's. He beat me, but said, "you took a 16 second car and put it in the 13's and it gets better fuel mileage than it did stock...that's respectful". I want to keep that respect, but without a turbo, and obviously without breaking the bank. I guess it'll always be nothing more than a dream.

Another answer to a future question of mine. There is a small Corvette dealer right near my house. There is a C5 bodied Z06 parked right out front. It's black and gorgeous. I thought about driving up there and seeing if they'd be interested in a trade, but I figured they'd laugh in my face. Besides, a friend of mine just bought a '99 C5 6 speed. It's red with beige interior, but still, all of my friends drive something different. I aactually like being the underdog with the *** car. When I get asked what I drive and I say "Miata", they stereotype, but when they see my car they actually dig it. I get crap for driving a Miata, but it gets appreciated for what it is and the work that I have done to it. People understand that anybody can buy a Mustang Cobra and then call Summit and order the exact same parts as the next guy.

I thought about the F20c as it has been done before, and it is a drivetrain that originally came in a RWD platform. It also is expensive and takes a lot of work / finances to complete.
There are so many miata swaps out there. I guess the question is..do we really need to do a swap to be completely satisfied?

Slightly OT. Sleepers are gay. What's the point? Nobody will race a sleeper. And if you know there is more than appears, then it's not a sleeper.
Never understood the whole "sleeper" deal, aside from maybe being more obscure to cops. But around here, they usually pull you over for doing stupid **** regardless of if you look fast or not.
