i would have suggested original silver silver dollars and solder them to the top of the piston.

Nice work Joe! I thought I would come here to see what you guys were up to. I knew it was no good!

Great story too!

I had to get in on the "support post" for the O.P. Damn I hope he does it lol

ApexOnYou 11-25-2008 05:09 PM

Hahaha, you almost had me convinced Joe.

cueball1 11-25-2008 05:10 PM

Joe FTW! That was absolutely perfect. The only way it could possibly be better would be putting up a fake website with pics and info to link to.

I am completely impressed by your ability to make up complete BS and make it sound so damn convincing on the fly. You could have a big future in politics my friend!

chriscar 11-25-2008 05:12 PM

Joe, you are BRILLIANT! I jumped over to the M.net thread after reading the initial post here, so I didn't know your fiddy cent story was a hoax, until returning here to finish the thread. Bravo!

Y8s, I chose the denomination based upon Wiki's article on US coinage. The 50¢ piece has the largest physical dimensions of any coin that's in current circulation, and its volume made for the perfect target CR. I wanted to avoid discussion of soldering, as my fabricated argument was founded partly on the idea that using epoxy was superior to welding as it avoided heat-stress to the piston. That, and I really want to see a picture of a destroyed piston with JFK's bust sticking out of it.

chucker, that thermostat vid really had a big impact on your life, didn't it?

Everyone else, thanks. I kinda rushed through that writeup (the whole thing from seeing jayc72's suggestion to completion was about 20 minutes) but I was pretty happy with how it came out. I've gotten a couple of PMs over at M.net as well, including one from Al English who said "I'm embarrassed to admit you took me in with that one," after I PM'ed him explaining the hoax so he'd stop rebutting my idea in the thread. I consider that sort of feedback a success. :D

Now, we just have to lie in wait for the OP to check back in.

If someone has the time to fabricate a writeup, I think it ought to be in the form of an article from a contemporary yet defunct magazine. Something late 90's perhaps. I can do the layout and create a PDF of it if someone can provide pictures and copy suggestions.

And thanks to everyone who is hopping on with supporting comments. We really need to make this seem real and plausible.

Feel free to pilfer pics from my build thread.

I hope someone can beat me to it, but I'll try and get a photo of a piston with a 50¢ "glued" to the top by early next week.

bryantaylor 11-25-2008 08:54 PM

this and that thread is full of win!

curly 11-25-2008 09:12 PM

some one should suggest drilling and tapping a piston, then bolting coins to it.

"it would avoid the heat treat issue, two thumbs way up!"

Someone should do that and post it up. This thread has a lot of potential.

I'm working on a magazine article from the late 90s about a race team in the UK who did the coins-and-epoxy trick. I WAS going to say that they were running a Ford engine (which tied in to the reason they used US currency) but now I apparently have to re-craft it around a Honda... :D

jayc72 11-25-2008 10:01 PM

Site this book: "Cheating: An Inside Look At The Bad Things Good Nascar Nextel Cup Racers Do In Pursuit Of Speed"

Gluing a coin to the top of a piston seriously sounds redneck enough for NASCAR. Probably not too many NASCAR buffs on m.net.

I'd help with photos but I have neither piston or US currency.

He's probably pretty smug about the fact that he came up with this great idea all by himself that no one else is doing.

leatherface24 11-26-2008 09:24 AM

dude this is so funny and wrong at the same time....ill continue to "support" the O.P's "ingenuity" :)

I think I have these 50 cent coins, and I have a piston sitting on my table.

How do you want me to take the picture?
