Gordon, do the T470s still have the hot-swappable battery setup that the 440 does?

Yep, its got an internal battery that you have to disassemble the unit to get to, and the externally accessible hot swap-able one.



This guy does an unboxing and then immediately rips the machine apart to upgrade the ram, so it shows the internals pretty well. If you get the same preview image I do, it shows the external battery.

My advice is to buy a 2nd-hand high-spec "rugged" laptop with a large screen resolution and touchpad that "feels/works right".
By "rugged" I mean one that has strong hinges and a solid case - if the screen casing is light/flimsy it won't last long for road use.
A Core-i5 has plenty of grunt for TunerStudio.

My worst ever purchase was a brand new, top of the line, Toshiba laptop years ago, it was nearly A$5,000.
2 years later it was worth about A$500 and newer, far cheaper laptops were more powerful, had better features and were getting cheaper all the time.

I now have 2 laptops for tuning, a Dell Latitude Core-i7 in the garage and a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 (Pentium, not Celeron, it has enough grunt for TunerStudio) laptop for road-use.

I bought the Inspiron new because it's tiny, can be used as a tablet (has a touchscreen and keyboard can be folded behind screen), is light, rugged, has a beautiful display and is my "go-everywhere device" that I also use for work.

I bought the Latttude from a PC refurbisher for less than the cost of the Inspiron and it's basically a portable desktop machine, proper-sized keyboard with a large screen resolution. It came with a one year warranty too! (which I immediately voided by swapping the hard drive to a SSD)
Best value laptop you can buy is a high-spec 2nd hand one (as long as it works - you'll probably have to buy a new battery pack though).
The Inspiron has both a touchpad and "nipple mouse" but I've never liked the latter so never use it - DON'T buy a laptop with a "nipple mouse" only if you're not used to using them, you'll HATE it.

The Latitude is really too big for road tuning in the car so I use the Inspiron for that.

The Inspiron's screen resolution is too small for full-time tuning use, scrolling to see parts of a map is annoying - its small size makes up for that when road tuning.

The Inspiron's touch-screen isn't much use in TunerStudio (partly because the screen size is so small and you miss your target, but mostly because TS's GUI was never written for touchscreen use) so don't let the presence/absence of a touchscreen influence your choice (touchscreens are more expensive too).

 

Thanks for the input. The T470's build quality appears to be very good, all the reviews say it's really strong/rugged.

They deal in off lease corporate stuff.

It won't be 10/10 looking, but easily 8-9/10, and will work 10/10.

I buy all my laptops off lease. The difference in new retail and what i paid for my EliteBook is absurd.

I don't think that X1 is the most current generation, but it's still way more powerful than you need to run tuning software.
