Really, why stop just with cars. Maybe all manufacturing should be brought back to the US. Then you could pay $350 for a pair of shoes not made in a sweat shop in Bangladesh!
You yourself can make that choice. But we already know you drive a Japanese car, made in Japan. I'll wager that your clothes are not made in America, nor are any of the electronics in your home. Let's make it wasy, what things do you buy that ARE made in America?

"should"-based economic legislation is what a conservative would be against I would think.
ideally, GM et al would make friggin awesome cars and the japanese would want them as much as they want their own.
because as soon as you start restricting imports from a country, they start restricting imports from you out of "fairness" (or retaliation).
a good example is the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930.

Let the market force the GMs to "innovate or perish" maybe?

Yes I do have a Japanese car but I also own 2 Fords. Obviously I have clothes and electronics thet are imported(we all do). That dosent mean that the US auto makers should just go away.

So invent something that everyone in the world wants, and produce it in America. The big 3 have failed to produce a product that the American public wants. So they should go out of business. If you cannot change and compete with everyone else you loose.
