Holy ****, that's terrible. I'm sorry to hear that.

Helps explain why our two rescue kitties are inside only

definitely. I was pretty upset because I couldn't do anything to help her but go to the vet and put her to sleep. ended up going to the wasp nest and pouring boiling water down the hole in the ground and havnt seen the wasps since. the two new cats are inside all the time. ive been thinking about getting a leash of some sort so I can walk them around outside and not worry about them wandering off (3 acres of land with lots of coyotes and fairly large birds).

We are moving into our new house... and I about crumbled in pure guilt for putting my cat in a carrier and in the truck.

That guilt died off quickly when we released him inside the new house.

He went absolute berserk with his new running territory.

Keep an eye on your kitty. That's how the ordeal with mine started. Salmonella as near as we could tell. He's recovering, but it still skeletal.

Keep him/her hydrated as much as possible. Go in for the subcutaneous fluids if necessary. After that, it's just a waiting game. My cat did not eat or drink for 6 days at all, and only very sparingly after that.
