How about an Opel GT? Incredibly simple, affordable, lighter than a miata, transverse leaf front suspension, good looking IMO, and awesome manual pop-up headlights. You can find lots of them for under $5,000 in decent condition. I've been on their forum for awhile now... lots of great support.

I passed a black Opel GT sitting in some guys lot the other day, looking like it might be for sale. Very tempting to go look into it further. Looks like one of those "it runs, but needs some work" cars, and I don't need one of those right now at all. But of course any car that old, especially an Opel is going to require work. Those cars are pure sex though. Beautiful lines.
