Though I don't want to encourage the type of slumming found in this thread, this article is relevant:

Cheap Bourbons, Ranked
#1. Old Crow Reserve. You've got to respect the humility of a brand whose deluxe version costs $14 a bottle. OC Reserve is aged for four years to the stock model's three, and it's bottled at 86 proof rather than 80, but these fancifications don't hide the quick and sweet caramel character of the original. The Reserve is set apart by a light dose of cinnamon and a dark fruit edge that make it ideal for breakfast, dessert, and all meals in between.

Hmm.

You know, I've avoided Old Crow just on general stigma, but now you've got me thinking that I may need to pick up a bottle the next time I'm at the store.

Note that I believe that is technically Old Crow Reserve (the "premium" version).

Well, BuyRiteWines (the local big-box liquor store) lists the Reserve on their website for $22 a handle, so I'm definitely going to give it a shot. I mean, we're talking Heaven Hill / Evan Williams money here.

Same here. Would also recommend Bulleit Rye.

Although this is not in fact your thread, I will play along and suggest this:

Perhaps I misinterpreted what "moderately priced" is?

Prices in all countries for 1951 Macallan
1951 Macallan Single Malt 51 Year Old, Cask 644 (Spec. Orde - SKU 1007231

perhaps you should reconsider...I like scotch and all but am not discerning enough/rich enough to drink something worth easily over 2k...

I doubt if I could drink it or sell it, but I might bequeath it in my will.

Anyway, back to cheap whiskey.

That belongs in the Drinking Like a King thread, not this slum.

Soon will be there by new years... because it IS opened, its almost full but the seal is broken; so it's best to enjoy it while its still good, unless someone has a great idea for storing it.

I can store it for you. it may evaporate over time, but I have the proper vessel for such matters. trust me.

Pardon my ignorance, but does whiskey go bad from sitting in a closed bottle which has previously been opened?

I mean, I know that wine oxidizes once opened, but I've never heard of distilled spirits going sour.

I don't know how long it would take to go bad, but it will change once opened. Generally, the flavors will get a bit milder and smoother and different notes may become more apparent.

This effect is, of course, possibly all bullshit.

im sure, like all my friends have already said lol. I must be the only one that doesnt have this magical vessel/container/capsule.

The MAIN reason my brother gave it to me?

He is remodeling his house in Beverly Hills, and doesnt care for whiskys so much.
He let me take whatever I wanted that he left behind in his house for the Vulture clean up crew.

I found that box hidden in the back of the liquor cabinet among other expensive rums and spirits (that I took... I took it ALLLLLLLL) But I asked him about the whisky and he said he spent $8,300 for it in London, while drunk off wine and other things in a "tasting" party. He was a little reluctant to let me have it, but he said count it as a gift. He only opened it up this past month, thus the reluctance.

As for the rest, and traditionally his younger brother, I get all his hand-me-down ****.

-powered curtains
-Fireglass fire pit
-King-sized bed sets
-3 flat screen TVs
-$2k worth of wine of which I dont fancy in... (i know only the basics in wine)
-computerized stuffs
-cat toys for my cat.
-new refrigerator
-garbage disposal
-patio furniture
etc.

my kitchen counters are now older than my appliances, so now I called it "retroed out" (I have white 1970's counter tops in my house that we recently purchased)
etc etc...

My parents took most of it because they had the means... like 16 foot moving truck + a 16 ft. toy hauler attached to a twin-turboed 2014 ford exlporer... of which the said same brother bought them for their anniversary.

But yes, back to cheap, good whiskey.

As for cheap though I picked up a bottle of Cutty Sark, one of my favorite cheap scotch whiskys.

Just polished off a fifth of old crow last night. Not sure that I like it more than benchmark, but its not bad at all. Good deal for whiskey for a destitute sum of money.

I know it isn't whiskey, but still good strait. Buddy of mine is a pretty big whiskey guy and loves it to. Especially since it is $15 a bottle give or take. I got a case at $14 sitting here.....well what is left of the case anyway. According to him it's a sweet whiskey, or the most whiskey ish rum he's had. Good room temp, or cold. Pick your poison. Worth a try if you like the sweeter whiskies.
