maybe I'm a noob at autox, so educate me experts, how is that torque onset any different than this:

keeping in mind one has 4 wheels it goes to and the other 2, and front 2 no less.

(sorry if threadjack OP, if you don't like it lmk and I'll delete the last couple posts.)

hard to tell, they started measuring at 3K for christ's sake.

on that plot it also quickly makes it's full power within 500RPM; if the plot started at 2K I'm sure it would look a lot more linear and a lot more instant/smooth/controllable/predictable.

I cant imagine the subaru you posted being easy to autox, like at all. Typically most autoxes you stay in 2nd gear, and below 4K. Trying to maintain corner speed when halfway through the corner and 1mm more of your foot can mean an extra 200rwtq going to the wheels--isn't easy to control.

some of the fastest autox cars out there make about 90hp and when you see them, they are the smoothest; not herky jerk.

I know exactly what you're talking about, even though I pretty much know nothing about autox.

The power comes on very similar. Have you driven an ST? I have, it comes on like that and either spins or torque steers in 1st 2nd and 3rd, and you have to pedal it just like any other car.

That plot I posted is a track car, so obviously it would suck to autox at 500wtq, I was just illustrating the curves and torque onset.

Yes I meant jerky as in violent and quickly changing directions rapidly. IE not smooth transitions. However, I do find a lot of the people there to be a bit closed off, or maybe a little elitist. Not sure how to put it. I find myself as friendly and open to conversations. I do have a mild anxiety issue and possibly overcompensate with trying to chat. I do have a general distaste for mankind, but try not to blame individuals before I meet them. One of the two event areas are 15min from my house. I'd be happy to chill with people after. Most of the people seem to have this "oh his times are from tires" or not very talkative. I like to take it serious to a point, but not so much as to alienate from other drivers. Meeting and learning from each other I thought was part of the point. Of course there is always some ancient Chinese secret I guess. I find the closed mindedness all over out here. Not one of our group, well then **** you. At some point most people in a group were new to that group. At what point is too new?

The ST basically stays in 2nd gear for every run. It's long enough ratio for the longer bits and the motor is torquey enough for the slow turns. Last session I hit 3rd in one section of course. Felt a bit to fast for a parking lot. I need to get better at the pin cone stuff as the ST likes to push a bit at low speed corners.

My dad had a last gen STI in England I drove a bit. Never felt low on torque. I did learn that getting on throttle earlier helped a lot. Trying to drive it slow in fast out like a Miata (RWD) made it push and under steer terribly. Coming in on brakes early and throttling sooner made it claw its way through corners and was a lot more controllable and faster. There are things that Subby could do I'd never try in my Miata. Off camber turns with humps in them at heavy throttle to be one of them. I've ridden with my dad and left the ground, all 4 tires, shifted, landed and kept going. The ST will sorta do it, just haven't had the ***** to try it in my wives daily in case it goes wrong.

I have one scuff from one cone I nailed last event on the front bumper corner. Next event I will find that cone, and I will kill it.

So I guess that's the norm. Sad. It seems that every hobby if stuffed full of screw the noobs and elitist ******. There are stupid people definitely, but some just don't know better. Buddy from school didn't know more than how to change oil. However he is curious and researches stuff and asks questions. He doesn't just walk into the autox event big swinging dick style. He drives an auto Jetta. Just wants to learn from the more experienced. People like him get turned away from the sport by ***** that look down on him from some tower of greatness. If they were so great they wouldn't get hosed by a noob in a stock Focus. Car guys, gun groups, photography nerds, chefs, and insert group of like minded people with experience here groups treat new and interested people like plebes drooling on their own dicks. Yes many are really annoying. The idiot kid behind me in class wanting to twin turbo his bone stock new gen V6 Mustang cause racecar makes me want to him in the throat. Where is the divide. I know I ask dumb questions on here, but I'm not asking what Ebay turbo manifold to buy. Sometime I just come up fruitless on my search and MT.net has **** ton of threads to read through.

I don't **** on everyone because I won an event. I wonder why, because I don't think I'm very good. I want to find someone faster now and learn from them. If I ever get good and win a lot I'd want to teach the guys behind me to be faster. The faster they are the better the competition for me to speed up more. Just because you sit on top of a hill doesn't mean there isn't a bigger one to climb.

You were cool when we met at Steve's house last summer, it's just autox douches just doing their thing. Don't worry, you are a wiser man to be an eternal student than think you know everything.

“The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.”
― Bertrand Russell

I know what you mean though. Sometimes at autox people are high and mighty, touting all the knowledge because they have tons of EXP points while simultaneously believing misinformation. I don't pretend to expert, but I'm constantly surprised by the solid foundations I've picked up from reading a website with a bunch of gay dudes on it. The learning never stops.

Figured I'd update this thread a bit. Only mods to the car so far are an air filter replacement, engine bushing, and I just did the aluminum bushings for the shifter on the transmission. Busshings for the shifter were much needed. Was having a hard time getting into 1st, 2nd, and reverse most times. Shifting was vague and notchy, now it's much better. The factory rubber bushing would let the cable where is goes to the tranny move A LOT. Probably going to do the shifter bushing at the shifter base next.

It replaces these rubber stuffed ones with billit aluminum ones.

Also we proved last sunday that more stripes make more fast. Started as a way to protect the bumper so my wife wouldn't worry about the paint. Then turned into why you shouldn't leave two male vets around tape and free time.

Just about every run we added to the debacle. We were always parked right where people came through after their runs. Some laughed and some just shook their heads. We had fun and didn't effect anyone else directly, so screw them. I found it hilarious some were in the grid punching their steering wheels cause they lost a second from last run, and my buddy and I were giggling like school girls adding tape to the car

I'm 2 for 4 now with 1st place. Other guy in an ST that is not in Novice still has me beat by about a second. The gap is getting smaller between us though.

Yeah there are a good amount of full of themselves Auto-Xers. Mostly I make fun of the guys that show up with their 600hp STi's with Monster stickers on them....then run 10 seconds slower then my 90hp MR2. I mean yer wearing a flat brimmed Monster hat, I thought you wanted to get made fun of. What the problem is?

I am one of those that will talk to people new or old. I usually like to ride along with newbs, give them some pointers, try to make it fun for them so that they come back and so on.

Saying all that, I haven't been at an Auto-X in like 2 years because we wanted to save for another house. Then we bought said house, now we have two houses and no time to Auto-X.

I do minimal yard work. Wife likes mowing, I weed whack. Anything more and the ginger burns.

I never understood hazing noobs in a realm where more decent people make it better overall.

This is kinda where I am at the moment. Wife still wants to go back, we Auto-x'd for like 10 years straight. I think she just needs a hobby.

ST update. Just got home from 2 weeks ans 5k+ miles in the car. No issues. I have the lower of my spine bones trying to fuse together and other back, wrist, ankle, blah issues. I feel great. Other than sleep issue from air beds, family couches, forgetting my sleep apnea machine I'm good. 2 adults and 2 dogs + supplies all faired well. I wish I had the chance and foresight to post of and meet some long distance members.I had soem family and legal things to attend to. Buried my uncle. Ex Vietnam vet, Hells Angles, all around awesome dude got buried. Other half was the legal crap for my engine. Not much free time.
Pre trip

I got these in finally and they were waiting for me when I got back, Mountune clubsports. I did the catch can before I left and deleted the AGS crap as well.

That looks like one fun trip, many

I made a similar run starting in KC all up around Denver, chasing my buddy in a ST the whole time. We only made around 2000 miles or so though, awesome roads for most of them though.

I've helped him install a new rear swaybar, watching that thing corner is pretty funny, haven't seen it since the new bar but he said it's a lot flatter. I think that's all he's done to it so far, I know he's got some new motor mounts to install too.

It's a fun car, no doubt! Hell of a lot more comfy than my car, too
