A stressed belt in the tire will show the same symptoms you speak of.

If the pump starts and stops working, it's the pressure release valve inside the pump. That valve opens to bypass fluid and thereby regulate pressure. Sounds like the valve is sticking to me. Course using the wrong fluid does that.

We have 8 of these GMC's and bought them brand new in the late 80's. We have been using regular P/S fluid in all of them since way back when. So it seems highly unlikely that using the wrong fluid for 20 years finally caught up to us in 1 truck. I am not a mechanic, I just play one for the family business. The retiring mechanic has been turning wrenches for over 40 years, he's just lazy.....not stupid.

I'm putting the new pump in on Saturday, hopefully that's the problem. I'll report back once I swap pumps if it resolved anything.

No ****. I was being sarcastic sir. YOU"RE the one that said "power steering fluid is just ATF without the red pigment added". That's not correct. So being sarcastic I suggested you go dump some in your Honda, which requires a special power steering fluid exclusive to Honda, and different that either P/S fluid or ATF fluid.

I don't care what yall do. You can go put whatever fluid you want in there. Dump a little of everything. It's not my car. I'm just trying to help Vash diagnose a problem. He says he used the wrong fluid, so I suggest he use the correct fluid. Pretty ******* logical first step if you ask me. Just cause you've done it before and it didn't cause any immediate perceivable problems for you doesn't mean the ****'s the same and can universally be switched around with no adverse affects on seals or valves. Multiple times I've seen P/S racks (or steering boxes) blow a seal or a P/S pump valve get stuck from using the wrong fluid.

your point is dull, which in turn makes is not a point, but more of a blunt object.

What-a-bitch that P/S pump was. Today I make my time x 1.5 sooo I didn't rush anything. New pump is in, I did the recommended bleeding I found online about 4 times and I took it for a test drive. I don't want to say I'm 100% sure seeing it was a 5 minute drive, but I think its fixed. No steering pump noise, no belt squeaks, no pulling or wandering, and when I let go of the wheel it stayed straight. We'll find out Monday after driving it for an hour or so.

One of our other trucks had to be towed in yesterday. One of our brazil's was going up a pretty steep hill from a stoplight with the truck double overloaded with planks and at the 2-3 shift the truck turned off. (He said it just turned off....so he says) I checked it yesterday and it looks blown. Smoke coming out of the carburetor and when I try to start it, it cranks but wont turn over and makes a garble noise from the motor. We now have....1 truck that is road worthy out of 6, and we have 6 guys and we work on different jobs. Next week should be fun.

And on a side note, we were robbed again last night. I think its someone trying to **** us, rather than steal our forms for scrap. They are only taking our corner setups and nothing more. They now stole all of our corners and W's that were at our shop, every one. Our next wall has 22 corners in it...... Called the cops, did the paperwork, assembled the other guys in the shop complex and talked. Cameras are going up and we are gonna all do random patrols. The plan is to not kill anyone over this.....but we're gonna break ******* legs.
