The problem is finding one at this point. I've molested and/or crushed them all.

And yes, i got 41mpg over 1000 miles on the way down to the GRM $2012 Challenge. Been daily driving this thing for 4.5 years now, purchased for $900, still under GRM $2013 budget. Parts are DIRT cheap, available, and the cars are cake to work on.

Beware: The power you can make for peanuts will completely ruin you on BPs for life, save for the whole FWD thing.

Good luck with that. The only reason to specify a 626 is if you're looking for a Touring (hatchback) model. Otherwise, they're no more usable for your purposes than an MX6. And you won't find a Touring GT anymore.

If you really just want a hatch, consider the 1st gen Probe GT instead. They're uglier, slightly heavier, but are the same car otherwise. Swap in a set of MX6 seats (i have a spare pair, come and get them) and roll.

As a bonus, the Probes aren't terribly hard to find.

Funny, i actually just saw one of those wagons in Pull A Part last weekend.

Also: Stanza wagonback thing?

Also awesome cars. I had one years ago, very reliable, good MPG, comfy, and easy to make into a snorting troll mobile.

OP, if you have $2000, you're looking for a car. Not a specific kind of car. You're looking for the best car you can possibly find for the $2000. You can't be picky.

Cars normally known as being reliable are going to be total pieces of this at this price point, and cars known as being shitty aren't going to be any worse.

What are the odds that this could be fixed with new motor/transmission mounts?

Who cares? Transmissions for that are like $50 and can be swapped in an afternoon.

Yah, in my experience almost any car under the 1k mark that runs isnt a bad buy, with craigslist, a 1K car is easy to sell.

Buy it, put some mounts in it or even a tranny, if you like it drive it, if you hate it, clean it up and flip it for double what you paid.

It's only 100 miles away...if they still have it I'm going to try to see it this weekend. Maybe see if I can get it for $500 or $600.

I had a CRX like that, same color and everything (but in much worse shape, based on appearances). I think I sold it for $1400 10-12 years ago.

I had an HF. Mileage was amazing but it really wasn't fun to drive at all.

I am seriously trying to figure out how to work this into the upcoming 3 day weekend. I want to be in VA beach that Saturday night, I would need to figure out how to get there, and then to Richmond the next morning. Or take the train to Richmond, then drive to VA beach, to MS Sunday. Figure out how to get home Monday.

I'll be honest- I'd gladly take a couple of days off and drive this car down to you in exchange for airfare, hotel and gas money. I could use a break about now. and it's been a while since I've driven a car...

I want one, well an MX6 really, ever since reading about your ---- sore. Problem is they are all really hard to find around here. If I could find a decent one near almost any of the major cities in TX I could go get it and make the excuse it's to go see friends, but havent had much luck.

I find some in NM and Louisiana but I have a problem with driving to another state to buy a 1K car.

My brother has a bone stock 1988 that he bought brand new. I'd be surprised if it has 80k on it.

I may have to murder him for it.

Anyone have experience with the 1st gen CR-V's? It's just barely on my list, but there's one locally that's pretty clean so I'm considering it. Mileage is just good enough. How are they for daily driving? I figure they're fairly boring, but then I've been daily driving a Nissan Frontier so it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
