While there's not as may ratio choices as a 9 inch, there's still plenty of ratios available for the 12 bolt.
According to DTS (Drivetrain Specialists):
The 9 inch is much heavier than the 12 bolt, but not much stronger. The additional pinion support bearing adds a lot of weight but not much more strength. 12 bolt ring gear is 8.875" compared to, well, 9" in the 9 inch, so there's not a huge difference there. 12 bolt cost less than an equivalent 9 inch.
DTS says they could build a Dana 60 for a lot less money than the 9 inch while being much stronger and weighing roughly the same. It has a 9.750 ring gear.
This guy has "many" (not sure the number) passes on that 12 bolt gearset. He's already on his second turbo.
