Picking a Handgun...

Ruger SP101...purchased to be my wife's house gun. Ruger makes really strong revolvers but a lot of the parts are very roughly cast. Sooo...the way to clean up the trigger and action is to do a complete teardown and hand polish all the contact points to as close to a chrome finish as can be done while removing as little material as possible.
I'm using the Dremel occasionally on the really rough parts that aren't as critical, and then hand polishing using a MicroMesh 4-1 buffer stick on all the important parts (especially the hammer and sear contact point).
Fortunately, there are some really good instructions available from a former Ruger gunsmith. Otherwise I wouldn't be messing around polishing random stuff in the action.

Yet another reason for the revolver, autos don't tend to play well with frangible ammo. Load it w/ Glasers in .38 for her, .357 for you. Over penetration and the associated lawsuits are a thing of the past.
Have. With the Crimson Trace laser. Excellent carry option when in more "upscale" clothing...
Wonderful personal defense round, provided you hit your target and only your target. Strong possibility for a carry load, but not for use at home.

So I found a way to take a simple wood clamp (like dull scissors with a spring holding it closed) as a bipod and did some bench rest with my Ruger today. Quarter sized groups at 25 yards... yes please.
As said on the last page... I intend to order a 9mm M&P.... probably Pro model. Whats nice is it should be enjoyable on the range... store well in my emergency safe and provide me a great gun to start possibly doing competitions with USPSA and other groups.
Revolver is nice... until you have to reload. The M&Ps are VERY reliable. Revolvers can also malfunction... I'd rather 17+1 to 6. And 17+1x2.. or modded magainze 22+1.

Massad was actually someone who I have heard talk about keeping the receipt with the ammo.
Yes, use what the cops use (I did not mention that). Actually, what do you do? Walk up to them and ask them to empty out their mag so you can see what is in there <G>. Anyway, what I am saying is that if you use a brand of ammo that is ++P and has a picture of a bloody skull with a knife sticking through it on the box your lawyer will not be happy.

And, as far as asking what they carry, just call your local PD and ask if they carry hollowpoint bullets and if they are at liberty to say, what brand. Just be honest and say that you want to be able to protect your home with the same ammo they protect theirs with. In this neck of the woods I have seen Winchester Silver Tips which I don't have any experience with and thus not my personal choice, Winchester Ranger-T LE (t is for talon, LE for law enforcement) which happens to be my favorite, and speer gold dot, my second favorite. Also some carry Federal HST II. Make sure to get the HST II and NOT the Hydroshock I version. I remember hearing some not so flattering things about the first gen hydroshocks.
For me:
- Shotgun (cruiser ready) loaded with 00 buck
- AR-15 with several mags loaded with handload .223 (last ditch home defense only due to hand loads)
- .45acp with Gold Dots.
- 9mm with Ranger-T LE loads
- .40 S&W with handload hornady hollowpoints (last ditch as above - I was trying to duplicate a factory hollowpoint for practice purposes)

As said.. the M&P9 Pro was ordered. 4.25" barrel, 4.5lb trigger, Trijicon night sights.
Also adding a Kel-tec Sub 2000 to the order.... I'm unsure which magazine format to get it in though. Glock 17, S&W 59 or Beretta 92.

I understand you have already made a purchase decision.
However, to clarify a point for others who might be considering purchasing nightstand guns:
In reverse order, Yes, revolvers can malfunction. Any complex mechanical device can. However, the chances of a revolver malfunctioning are slimmer than an automatic malfunctioning, considering the weapon itself, ammo feed or failure and operator error. - Revolvers are simpler tools and therefore (if equally maintained) less prone to error than automatics.
Reloading a pistol is relatively easy with a speed loader. You now have 6+6 for a prolonged firefight. However, unless you being targeted for some serious revenge/retribution/example, once the first shot is fired, the criminal(s) will be making a hasty exit. - Their objective generally is to break in, grab goods and depart, not an improptu re-enactment of Mogadishu.
