I had 5 iphone 3GS phones in 2-years. Every one of them had about 8 minutes of battery life after a couple months, all 5 lost with wifi functionality first, then other things, the browser was slow as hell, and it was a pain in the *** on the computer every time.

I never did take the leap of faith to re-rom...
BUT!!!
Sprint rolled out a surprise Gingerbread release for the Epic 4g thursday - I don't know if it was a true "surprise" - but it surprised the **** out of me - I plugged my phone in Friday night to charge it - Ran it all day saturday - probably did 4-6 hours of pandora playing through a speaker set up while a friend painted my bedroom, did probably another solid hour of GPS navigating during several different trips, then didn't have the charger saturday night, so I just turned it off around 1am. Turned it back on at 8 this morning, had it on all day long, several phone calls throughout the day, it just now gave me a "low battery warning"...
Normally, I would expect my battery to eat **** and die after a couple hours of streaming pandora - when I pulled it off of the pandora after the good long session it had, I asked my friend if she had plugged my phone in - because there wasn't any charger in sight, and the battery was still at like 80%.
Oh - and my phone is fast as **** too now, compared to android 2.2, where i would often have to wait for the home screen to load back up, etc., I haven't YET waited on anything to load on 2.3.
Holy ****, I thought it was flawless, until I sent a text and realized that someone decided to adopt the iPhones "autocorrect" feature - after it fucked up a text or two, I turned that **** off ASAP.
Pending on how it performs tomorrow, I may decide to drop the extended battery and go back to stock.

I got the GBread update too... so far has integrated seamlessly with my setup. I recently had to add a hack called "Journaling On" to help with a few hickups I had started to get. No more hickups, but I am having a for-no-reason reboot about once a day. It only happens when I'm switch from one memory consuming task to another... like going straight from Youtube to the Map app.
I cracked the **** out of the screen the other day, so waiting for a parts phone to pop up on CL or may splurge on an eBay refurbished one.

I rooted my HTC Inspire about 2 months ago. Wasnt having any issues with it at all before, but someone came up with a practically "one click" method, so I couldnt resist. On my second custom rom, both Sense based, and over clocked to 1.6ghz. Up from 1.1ghz. Not sure if anyone else is using the Inspire, but my current rom is called RCMix3d Runny v4.0. It has a bunch of awesome features and a good amount of flashy things and its based off 2.3.5GB and Sense 3.5.
Using setCPU, while allows you to set profiles for the cpu speeds. So while its screen-on its over clocked. Screen off under-clocked. Plus it allows you to set profiles for specific temperatures and battery %. Battery life still sucks though. Dont get a great signal at work, in my pocket, and there is no wifi. If I would put in into airplane mode while Im working Im sure I could get a full 2 days of use. But Im lazy and forgetful.

In any case, Verizon finally pushed a workable 2.3.4 update to my phone this morning. Took some finagling but I got it to install, all seems to be working well so far. Phone is definitely faster.

xda development just came out with a root for the stock interface on the epic touch 4G. I rooted using the script, then added the wifi tether app. I waited to root for the reason above. Every custom rom seems to have some sorta glitch no matter how minor. The stock rom for my phone is fantastic and I didn't want to change it.

I was pretty close to rooting, was looking at CM7 and a few other ROMs. What stopped me is that every single ROM seemed to have at least one fairly inconvenient glitch. (That, and I'm scared.)

getting root was easy but keeping it with the updates was a bit more work. ultimately, it's good and solid now. if the low space warning stays away, i'll be even happier.

I'm using stock rom rooted. it's the latest iteration of 2.3.4 with the fixes. the ability to back up and restore the whole phone is worth it.

Catch-22...the stock DInc rom was 2.2 (until now). Now that we have a stock 2.3.4, it's not rootable (at least until someone figures it out). If I rooted, I could stay with rooted Froyo, or get a customer 2.3.4 Gingerbread rom like CM7. Just didn't want to mess with those...every single one had a glitch, trackpad didn't work, camera would only shoot low-res, weird stuff like that.
I feel you on custom roms btw. I like the stock calendar and exchange integration with sense.
