Share your other hobbies?

Out of random curiosity, when you crazy people aren't hammering on the Miata or e-thugging, what else do you do?

I'm obsessed with building electronics, Amateur Radio, Obviously Photography, bikes.. Drinking myself into a coma.. Is there more to life? ;)

Savington 01-22-2009 01:41 AM

I race.

(read: i am poor and I have no other hobbies)

naarleven 01-22-2009 01:48 AM

I spend most of my time drinking, listening to music, and studying. In that order.

But I guess those don't count as hobbies.

kenzo42 01-22-2009 01:50 AM

I have a Japanese arcade machine called the Konami Windy for emulation. Also will start playing Street Fighter 4 competitively when it comes out in Feb.

I still skateboard sometimes and used to break dance in HS.

Is music a hobby? Northern soul, Brit pop, punk (the Jam), No.Cal underground hip hop, 90s early 2k hip hop

N3v 01-22-2009 02:13 AM

this makes me realize how completely wrapped up in cars I am.

I need to skateboard more. When its not frigidly cold outside I try to skateboard a lot until I bust my ass hard, then I lay off it for a week or two.

gah, what the hell else do I do? I mean yeah I like electronics, but the last thing I built was my megasquirt

Edit: oh yeah I also like heavy drinking

i sell electronics nowadays, i use to drink a lot. lived on campus in east tennessee, itll happen.

Attachment 208948
yeah, its overkill. i could have my turbo kit for whats sitting on this table :(. i've got a 360 and a canon bag with a rebel xsi tucked away somewhere back there. thankfully i haven't bought a computer part in months now!

hoping to get back into photography and graphics once im "done" with my car. was at one point but it kinda died off lol.

NA6C-Guy 01-22-2009 04:19 AM

I dont really have any real hobbies I guess. I game a bit, deal with electronics (build computers, and fix peoples shit), a bit of photography, driving to kill time. Thats pretty much only on the weekends, since I work so damn much!

hustler 01-22-2009 08:49 AM

1st and foremost, motorsports. There is nothing I love more than getting on the track where nothing else matters.
2nd, I spend 2-hours in the gym 5-days per week, the other two are for food and wine. I'm a god.
I3rd, came from the wine business, so I still search for awesome, affordable bottles and just booked my next wine-trip to Washington for April. Right now my collection is around 50 bottles, but more on the way.
3.5th, I'm also a "foodie" so I'm always looking for a cool ethnic restaurant or driving 4-hours to get BBQ at some mystery placed that may or may not change my life.

hookers and blow

RotorNutFD3S 01-22-2009 09:11 AM

Used to build computers a lot since my dad owns a computer business. Also used to setup a ton of gaming websites. Still help setup and administrate/moderate forums.

When time allows and enough people gather, I'll play paintball or airsoft. Nothing like shooting your friends to relieve some stress. lol

Other than that, it's all about the car. Or the girlfriend.

Saml01 01-22-2009 09:39 AM

I work 9 - 6, 5 days a week so that doesnt leave much time to do anything. Before I was working on the car every single weekend and sometimes weekday nights, but now that its done its hard to find stuff to do.

I go to the gym 4 - 5 times a week, during my lunch hour at work.
I play the Saxophone.
I train my GF at the gym on Sunday mornings.
I recently upgraded my computer so I am playing every computer game I missed in the last 3 years.
I fix my friends cars, and anything else that does/doesnt need fixing.
I watch a lot of movies.
I recently bought a used D70, so im trying to get into photography.

flier129, I applaud your taste in computer audio. I have the same set in 4.2.

When I'm not turning a wrench at the shop or pouring concrete I'm always doing something. The miata is probably at the top of the list. Next would be my new love for longboarding, hoping to sign up for some competitions this spring. I haven't in a while, but I love rockin out on my friends PA system. He's the drummer and they keep all the shit at his house. Great way to relieve stress. And last would be boxing. I used to punch alot growing up and boxing became a outlet to still hit and not get in trouble. But since fucking up my wrists at work I haven't boxed since.... :hs:

thirdgen 01-22-2009 11:19 AM

It's like 20 degrees here with snow on the ground, but when the snow is gone I like to ride dirtbikes. I am a die hard motorhead and I love to wrench on the Miata, but I am also building a chopper from a '78 Triumph Bonneville 750. Also doing a restoration on a 1950 Willy's jeep. I also have a 1969 Chevy Blazer that is probably going to sit around for another decade. I like to play with my dogs in the yard, workout, do remodeling on my house. When my fiance is around I spend all my time with her cause I am pussywhipped, but she goes with me to the drag strip. She doesn't care if I buy another car or go to the bar or strip club with my friends while she is at work, so what more can I ask for. I also drink like a fish. It goes in seasons though, like right now while it's freakin freezing out I don't really drink. In the spring, summer, and fall I am a raging alcoholic, on a saturday afternoon especially. I'm talkin 30 pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon just to mow my grass and change my oil.

BenR 01-22-2009 11:33 AM

Im in a motorsports transition period.

I currently spend alot of time working on the house or yard (with 3 dogs that's alot of shit to shovel), grilling, or offroading.

jayc72 01-22-2009 11:36 AM

I've got two kids (4.5yr, 9mn), so while I have other hobbies I have no time to do them. Barely did anything with the car last year, bet I only put 2000km on it. Which is sad since there was nothing wrong with it.

Track days are my most fun hobby, and of course working on the car goes along with that.

Ham radio and homebrewing, but my interest in them waxes and wanes. I really need to brew a batch of beer before I forget how.

Been working on our house that we bought 6 months ago. Not really a hobby per se, but it takes a lot of time and I suppose I don't mind doing it.

The little time I have to play video games is on my PS2.

Firearms, bonsai (that didn't last too long though), music and hi-fi audio, wine, single malt scotch, cigars. I'm told I have ADD when it comes to hobbies. Jogging, lifting, and playing basketball are not done often enough these days.

Brian-bbc 01-22-2009 01:38 PM

well miata's are my hooby that turned into a side business. my real hobby which is also my career is ballroom and latin dancing. i am a professional dancer so i am teaching and traveling to competitions or get hired to come into a studio and coach. thats my real hobby. then i play with miata's and drink beer on the side.

It's a tough time to be getting in to them. Gun prices have skyrocketed over the last year or so along with ammunition. Used to be able to get 1K rounds of 7.62x39 for 80 bucks, now it's more like 200. The cheapest AK, a WASR used to go for $180, now they are 5-600. It's crazy out there.

gospeed81 01-22-2009 03:39 PM

Hobbies? Hobbies? Shit, I'm married. World's most time consuming hobby. My wife owns my time.

Not really, we spend a lot of time together though. I go out to the range and shoot every couple of weeks, and work out every morning. On weekends I strap my daughter's seat on the back of the bike and take some trails. Since I sold the motorcycle I've gotten back into mountain biking (used to train with school team), and the whole family can enjoy that much easier than motorcycling, although I miss being a hooligan.

Working on cars is and always will be my number one hobby though.

patsmx5 01-22-2009 03:51 PM

Messing with cars is my main hobby. I've got the miata I'm always fuc.. fixing on and I've got an 86' Trooper II I work on when I can. Going to MSU though so that pretty much kills all my time except for christmas and summer when I'm off. I love fishing, river running, going off shore, skiing, knee boarding, etc. My dad was a fisherman for 27 years. We have.... four boats. 14' homemade triple hull fishing boat, 17' Sunbird, 21' Sportcraft, and a 25' Sea Ox. And a 27' Loures but it needs... Everything so it doesn't count. That will be another project. I want to get into hunting one day.

EDIT: and a little bit of an audiophile. I enjoy listening to music and have a decent setup.

mikeflys1 01-22-2009 04:04 PM

Cars/bikes
Guns
Electronics/radio
Hiking, when its warm out
Working out...although i've definitely been slacking there

mikef85 01-22-2009 04:07 PM

Just turned 23 years old. SINGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just Built a House (moved in 2 months ago), I call that a hobby at this point because I did a bunch of crap involving that.

Audiophile
Cars/Motorcycles (Have a '05 ZX-6R that I bought brand new)
Computers
Games (Rockband, RPG, First Person Shooters)
Working out

Thats about all the things I have time for including the time I spend with friends and family. I really wish I could have 30 hours or so in a day...that would be nice.

My car is the most time consuming right now. I am trying to get it up and running by the end of February.

The prices on guns and ammo are purely reflective on knee jerk paranoia over what "might" happen, and over fears the economy will get so bad we'll be living in a mad max movie.

I haven't seen any official policies from this administration having anything to do with firearms. When I do, then I'll worry about my guns.

I bought mine in the Bush era when they were cheap. Suckas.

haven't been paying attention? :giggle:

Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

from Urban Policy

We all know what common sense laws mean when it comes to guns :jerkit:

naarleven 01-22-2009 08:36 PM

psychedelics.

And I think you guys should be okay. The handgun ban in D.C. was JUST overturned and it's being called a precedent for similar laws around the U.S..

NRA and Bob Levy and crew will sue the shit out of any state/federal law attempting to put any real restriction on gun ownership; especially handgun. Debate as you will about what constitutes an assault rifle but imho I think it's silly a 18 year old can buy a AK47 and not a handgun in FL.

nicacus 01-22-2009 08:58 PM

I have ADD when it comes to hobbies I get into lots of things and have little time to really commit to any of them.

Other than working/playing with the miata...

I've been playing the drums since the 4th grade.. so a long time.. I'm 22 now.
played in several different bands.. all of which have gone south. One of the bands from highschool had some music on purevolume.com for a while, I cant look now because the site is blocked at work. that band was called "Back For Tomorrow" think backstreet boys but with real instruments and bad singing.

I try to snowboard every other week..
I longboard/skateboard in the summer to offset some of the snowboard withdrawals.

Paintballing
Building/fixing computers
Fixing other peoples cars
Bought a mountain bike to try and get back into that.. didn’t work so well
Nitro RC cars
Wii fit is pretty badass..
Starting to get back into weight training
The list goes on and on

I work 10 hour shifts 7 days a week, every other week. not as cool as you would hope/think
If I had more energy on my week off I would have tons of other hobbies

This is unusual, but I'm very into the history of computers. Just as some people collect and fix up antique cars, there are thousands of people around the world who collect and fix up antique computers. We like the term "vintage" because if the machines are antique, then what does that make the owners who are even older? ;) Most collectors focus on equipment from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

In addition to my personal collection, I'm the president of a user group for the hobby. It's called MARCH -- "Mid-Atlantic Retro Computing Hobbyists". We run a bricks-and-mortar computer museum on the NJ shore, where as much as possible we get the systems up and running, because it's quite boring to only imagine them doing something! We like to let visitors play games on an Atari 2600, program a Commodore 64, make the "blinkenlights" flash on an Altair, connect through a teletype to a PDP-11, punch some cards on an IBM 029 .... we also host a big, public event every summer called the Vintage Computer Festival East. It's a lot like an antique car show, except that every exhibitor is required to have their systems on and working. So imagine a car show where you get to test drive everything. :)

In addition to the collecting/restoring side, I'm also writing a book about one specific aspect of computer history, so that takes a lot of my time.

I spend summers going to Yankees games and winters going to Giants games.

As for the Miata, half my time is spent driving it, and the other half is spent harassing Paul for help fixing it!
