Default so the guy in the Ferrari says...

My 9 year old son’s favorite video game these days is the Roblox car simulator. I get a lot of questions like “Dad, which is better- a Bugatti or a Lamborghini?”

Took him with me to run some errands today. Beautiful weather, top down, etc. As we’re pulling up to an intersection, the light goes yellow; I put my foot down, and Rocinante tears through with a cacophony of glorious turbo noises.

Half a mile down the road, we come up to a red light. A bright red 458 Italia pulls up right next to me. My son is speechless. The guy looks over at me and says “nice car man! what have you got going on with that thing?” I tell him about the turbo, that I’m building it for the track, etc. I compliment his car (of course). He says that he’s had it on the track, said it was fun but terrifying. Totally got the Miata thing, said that the Miata guys looked like they were having a lot more fun than him on track day.

We BS’d for another minute or two until the light changed, then went on our way. When we got home, my son couldn’t wait to tell my wife about the guy in the Ferrari who though my Miata was nice. It would be difficult to describe the look on her face when she heard this.

All in all, pretty good day. Turbo Miatas- legit.

On a turbo Miata? Around $20k, but only if it’s an LE. He offered me $12k for mine, but I wouldn’t take it.

Ayyyy....

Maybe if enough of us keep joking about this, we can actually raise the market price of turbo miatas. A hairdresser can dream.

It's cool when owners of really nice cars can appreciate our cheap cars for what they are. I've gotten a few compliments from guys in way nicer cars over the years and always feels good.

I think my favorite encounter was after walking away from a 996 911 several years ago. The guy pulls up to me at the next light looking very confused and, in a really thick German accent, says, "This is not as it came from the factory? No?"
