sub $35k or is there a used year that is the tits?

335d is in the 36 mpg range aslo. I could get that from gas.

Stein 02-13-2012 12:08 PM

Well, you didn't have any specs listed other than turbo and diesel.

Should be under $35K with some miles. I passed on a 6K mile 2011 for $39K because it was just too expensive for me when I'm going to burn it down in 3 years.

If you want better mileage I don't know if there is a better (any?) option in the US than the Jetta but I can't speak to reliability of VW's at all.

jeff_man 02-13-2012 12:27 PM

I thought there would be more options then a3, jetta and 335d when i posted this. Very sad to see there is not.

Ford Mondeo.

You'll have to import one from Europe, but it's a shockingly nice car to drive.

Can't dodge it, ram it.

There will be ramming tonight.

55k for the new 335d with options I would want.

You mention $35,000, is that your ceiling?

Look into the TDI Jetta. My buddy has a MY08 or 09 with well over 200k miles and aside from timing belt changes (he does them himself, you should be able to as well), he's had no issues. I know, I know, a VW without gremlins, perhaps he's lucky, but I feel the TDI Jettas are all blessed with good fortune.

jeff_man 02-13-2012 05:26 PM

Jettas are just so fugly

with small gas cars capable of 40mpgs at a fraction of the cost (car and fuel).....why do you insist on a turbodiesel?

shooterschmidty 02-13-2012 10:24 PM

F250 w/ 7.3?

For all the reasons that modern turbodiesels outsell petrol cars by, er, 'a lot' to one all over Europe. The power to mpg ratio can't be beaten. It's also a style of power delivery that's easier to use for most people, compared to the rev-the-tits-off-it style that's required from small eco petrol cars in comparison.

America is behind the times with turbodiesels, frankly. The latest engines are pretty amazing for most drivers.

Check out the new triple-turbo diesel that BMW has just released. 'Tis interesting.

I was a diesel sceptic until my dad bought an '05 UK-spec 535d, and had it remapped. It makes around 315bhp, and one gazillion lb/f of torque. The latter means it feels like it makes 315hp everywhere in the rev range.
The damping is awful, the tyre noise and the wind noise around the A pillar is sub-par, and the whole thing as a package feels like a bad compromise, but that's all another matter...

386k miles and counting here. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in that thing and drive to Wyoming.

when wife was looking for a commuter couple years back she ended up with vw tdi. i was dissapointed that subaru and honda both had really good press on their diesel motors (this is 2 years back) and i still haven't seen anything from them. iirc hondas was in the 60mpg range and subarus was similar.

this says mazda is bringing one in this year. huh

Is that figure in American gallons or Imperial gallons?
