Might be due to the mobile reply. I am sniffing around to see whats up... *sniffing*

Braineack 08-17-2010 03:46 PM

Thanks Rick.

LOL

I don't know how the hell you did that...but it's awesome.

I, like Brain, am having trouble understanding how this thing failed in sheer...I mean without being bolted to a Volkswagen with no springs and bolts as camber shims.

hustle is really just a 600lb black woman, all that extra wight is hard on suspension.

I knew it!

I always knew there was something up...white men don't have government jobs.

I agree. Awesome failure.

It is not necessarily a shearing failure because of the way it is oriented in the photo. That could just be the way things ended up after it let loose.

I would really like to see a high resolution close up shot of the failure surface. That could offer some clues that probably only I as a ME geek would be interested in.

Assuming no binding at the mounts (that would have created a moment load) it could have failed in tension since the shock is what limits the travel in extension. But then again, the front end has to be completely unloaded, quickly, to create a significant tension load. Were you catching air on some of those roads? :giggle:

It could also have been a compression failure initiated by a defect.

Are you sure the spring was seated properly? It looks OK on the bottom perch from what I can see.

That's a pretty impressive shock failure you've got there. If you need a temp replacement, I've got a set of (used) NA AGX taking up space in the garage.

How long before Hustler is riding no Ricelands :giggle:

y8s 08-17-2010 08:28 PM

what kind of top mounts were you using? there are some questionable rigid ones that I've seen that look pretty weaksauce.

hustler 08-17-2010 09:25 PM

Wirelessly posted

There are stock nb mounts. I'll get shots when I swap them out this weekend, and I'll also getthe pipe cutter out and gut te shock because I've always wanted to see the insides of a twin tube after lookig at a bunch of monothbes. I guess I need to call Bernie at Stewart Development together my Bilsteins revalved for stock springs. It looks like ice secured a temporary set of shocks for the time being but I want to get properly valves shocks in this car for daily surfing in style.

I was pretty impressed to see that damage from the rhythmic bumps of US69 in Oklahoma, but I assume this is a fatigue failure rather than failure from one impact.

For stock springs just use NB HD's. They're pretty well valved. You'll need the NB shock tops as well.

PM'd about a stock spring. PM me back in the next hour or so and it'll be in the mail today.

hustler 08-21-2010 05:09 PM

Any thoughts on Bilstein HD's with stock springs?

Levnubbin,
How many miles on those shocks and are they NA or NB? I might take those with "express" shipping.

Thanks again for the offers everyone.

chicksdigmiatas 08-21-2010 08:37 PM

If you could grab msm suspension, that would be win.

hustler 08-21-2010 08:47 PM

I just came home with MSM springs...so considering I have Bilstein HD's, NB front mounts, FM rear mounts, 37mm FCM stops, and MSM springs will I have a comfortable ride and reasonable ride height? Should I try to run the stock springs if I can? I plan to install these in the morning.
