Default Turboed my daily driver, '97 subaru outback sport

I recently turbocharged my daily driver/beater, a '97 outback sport with the original 2.2 at 118xxx miles. Why? Because I had all the components lying around and I had the itch to weld something. I'm sure it's not as fast as a WRX swap but at least it's no longer a turd accelerating. I'm running around 5psi.

Components:
Garrett GT2560 (GT28R, used to have a home in my miata)
Greddy Emanage Blue for spark, antistall and slight tweaks to fuel
Olderguy's Autotune!!!! (used for voltage clamp) !!!!!!
Vortec FMU for fuel
AEM WBO2
Stefs catch can
WRX intercooler
Cheapo Ebay BOV Modified to recirculate
Greddy EVO2 exhaust for 2.5RS (bolts right up!)
Misc fittings, hose and pipe

Gotta love it. 5psi on a DD makes a big difference in the 30-80mph range, where you need it most.

Having a lift probably made it a lot easier too

you are missing a bolt on your uppipe

but seriously, thats pretty cool. Could you also just take all wrx componants and fit them on for the physical turbo install (manifold, uppipe, turbo, downpipe, intercooler, etc)?

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Most WRX parts do not bolt up directly. WRX's have a dual-cam head with 2 exhaust ports per head, while my 2.2 has a single cam head with only one exhaust port per head. Also, the cross member is different for factory turbo Subarus. The up-pipe goes in front of the cross member and there's a relief/dent in the cross member to clear this pipe. I reused my factory exhaust manifold (Next on the list to be redone, VERY restrictive) and my up pipe goes behind the cross member. Fits pretty damn good I think. Plus, if I ever want to remove the entire setup, All I have to do is reinstall the factory cat-pipe.

I am using a WRX intercooler. I don't know how a WRX turbo compares in size to a GT2860, but it's what I had lying around so I used it. Spools VERY fast. Also not sure about a WRX downpipe, I would guess you could and just make an up-pipe to go to that location.

gt28 is a good deal bigger than the stocker, im pretty sure. Wrx comes with a little tiny TD04 13. Shoot, my gt25 turbo is bigger than the one on my buddies wrx, by quite a bit.

This reminds me of my dad's old car, a 2003 Impreza 2.5TS that we put an AVO kit on. It's since been de-turbo'd and traded on his '07 Passat wagon.

its the whistles ... you know, its only in the morning ...

"its like an alarm clock, woooWHOOOOOO!"

hey just realized that you do not need to fab up a manifold for those cars, thats like half the cost/work of the job. Only problem I have with them is that they look so freaking cluttered because all the wires, hoses, and all that crap cannot be hidden and it looks like a mess.

Ha! That up pipe and down pipe look very similar to mine! I bet that 2.5ts was pretty fun. How much boost did you run? No intercooler?

Prices are all guesses...
GT28 w/downpipe flange: $995
Stef's catch can: $65
Flanges: $75
A/N Fittings and hose: $100
Emanage with greddy pressure sensor, ignition harness, cable, software, etc: $600?
Olderguy's autotune: $65?
Vortec FMU: $? leftover from greddy miata kit
WRC I/C: $50 off nasioc
AEM WBO2: $250
Cat: $80
2.25" Jbend: $65x2
cat back: $500 (christmas gift from wife)
silicone hose and t-bolt clamps: $100
ebay BOV: $50
Misc: $100?

But all that I actually bought at the time of installation was the intercooler and BOV, one Jbend and the A/N fittings. The exhaust was a nice surprise The WBO2 and Emanage aren't actually mine...I'm kinda borrowing them indefinitely, or at least until I sell the car.
